laptop for vegas

could someone propose a laptop which i can use for edit fluently in vegas with the addition of a firestore ?

I like my sager: 3.4GHz P4, 800MHz FSB, 1 Gig RAM, and two 7200rpm 60Gig drives, 17" widescreen. A wonderful feature is a full numeric keypad (it's not doubled up on the main keyboard).

Screen size. Think LARGE and WIDESCREEN. My HP has a 17” widescreen display; I sprung for the extra resolution capability. That screen real estate will really come in handy.

I used to edit on a wide screen, and while it's GREAT for watching your rendered wide screen projects, I much prefer editing on a 4:3 monitor, as it gives me more up/down view. When you're working with a lot of tracks, it's a pain to have to continue scrolling up & down to view tracks underneath/above.

If you go widescreen, I'd highly suggest getting the biggest widescreen you can for the money, otherwise, it can get frusterating during editing.

Also, hopefully this laptop's not your primary editing station, but more of a portable/field station. You'll always have more power & speed for less money when dealing with a desktop vs. laptop.

So treat a 4:3 area of the screen as your "primary" monitor and leave a gutter on the side for tools:

All your stated benefits of 4:3, plus more space.

Is that Alienware you're on? I know they've got some pretty cool looks/themes. Touche', and thanks for a look at your set up. I love how people will lay Vegas out so differently ... you've got your preview window HUGE. Love it, though I tend to go with being able to more tracks at once due to that scrolling issue I mentioned.

On the note of theme, I saw a thread in here about optimizing performance, and choosing your Windows settings for "Best Performance". Once I did, all the pretty angles/soft edges went away for a very squared Windows 2000 look. I don't know if my performance is really increased or not by getting rid of all the little "pretties" that the computer has to keep up with while rendering, etc.

Do you notice any performance issues with it all dressed up like that?

Nope. HP. Downloaded a skin for Windows.

On my laptop, I run almost nothing BUT Vegas, so there's not much to lag down the system. No performance issues.

I do like a large preview window, but that's just a preference of mine. The layout, as I have it, puts the preview in the middle of the screen, which is impossible to do with a dual-monitor setup (because you'd have to split the preview between monitors, and that's no good). Definitely some advantages to the widescreen over two 4:3 screens, though the two screens do have more space overall.

One of those would be sweeeeeet. Sit in a coffeehouse and pop that thing open, you'll get swarmed, no doubt.

Just configured "mine" (what I would buy if I were going to do it): $4165.

Yeh, it does draw alot of "sometimes" unwanted attention.
I wish there was some way of turning off the LED's that glow on the alien eyes on the cover.
That - and the battery sucks BIGTIME. I only get about an hour before the low battery warning goes off but that's the price to pay for that huge 17" display, 256meg video card, two 80gig harddrives and two burners!

Yeah, I know a kid that's got one ... cost him well over $3K. Thing even has a SUB WOOFER built in. But have you ever picked on up, or desired to lug one around? Takes up a fair amount of real estate on any desktop/counter, and weighs about as much as a tank.

I'd rather have as much power in a desktop for 1/2 the price, and then purchase an additional hearty little desktop for field needs, or on the spot quick edits with clients, etc. ... even still, at the $4K+ price Jubal28 mentions, you'd probably have additional cash left over for some accessories/toys on set.

But don't get me wrong ... It's a FREAKIN' KILLER looking set. And yeah, you'd get people swarming over you wanting to touch it, hold it, lick it, whatever. Just looking back, that sounded REALLY bad. The laptop is what I'm talking about, of course!

Keeping it to a G rating ...

It is VERY heavy. I have to do alot of heavy duty editing in the field though so I wanted the horsepower. hardest part was finding a rolling bag that it would fit in along with the power supply, mouse, ext. HD, etc.....

The kid I mentioned packs it all in a heavy duty back pack ... I think his shoulders have sunk half way down to his waist already from the weight. Sure, a side of me is jealous of it, but since I don't need all that torque in the field, my banker side comes out, crunches the numbers & finds other ways to use the cash.

I'm also in the market for a laptop. It doesn't matter how heavy it is, and I don't need long battery-power -- basically it's a desktop replacement that I can take with me on jobs and use in hotel-rooms to begin editing early.

What processor would you recommend? Is the Centrino M comparable in speed to the regular Pentium IV? Our choices here (Asia) are the Centrino, regular Pentium IV, Celeron, and Centrino Celeron. There's also a "Mobile Pentium" and "Mobile Celeron", but I'm not sure if those are the same as Centrinos. There's a few AMD 'puters, but not many. Pentium IV is the cheapest and seems to be the highest-performing. I'm staying away from Celeron.

Size, weight, and battery power are not important, price and performance is. It doesn't have to be the fastest thing in the world either -- I'm not going to do any rendering on it. It just has to be useable in Vegas. ~2.5 GHz would be enough, but does the Centrino have the throughput to handle DV editing with Vegas?

Jubal...that is a sweeeeeeeeett asss layout...how do you get it to be like that? its so amazing. And save it to be like that?

SOO NIICEE!!

and how do u make it black?

I just laid out the windows the way I wanted them -- Vegas will stay that way until I change it.

As for the look, it was a skin I downloaded.

I tried having my preview window that large, but it runs MUCH More smoothly at a smaller size. I'm assuming once I get my stinkin' OS onto a seperate, faster drive, I'll have a little more torgue/speed released to help with a larger preview.

Yea but..how did u move the timeline downwards and everything?

i tried it..but it wouldnt move.

What skin did you download?
