laptop for DV rack

Re: laptop for DV rack

Barry

"A laptop can easily exceed the DVX's resolution. Think about it -- the DVX does 720x480, and almost any laptop can do at least 800x600, usually 1024x768".

Footage I shoot on the DVX and viewed on a 16:9, 42" plasma screen is not even comparable to the view I get on my laptop via DV rack, Quicktime, Premiere or anything else. Its not the resolution its the video card factor. DV Rack ( as any video assist ) is only a frame reference as far as field monitoring is concerned. Take the same DVX footage back to the studio and pump it through the big plasma (even LCD) screen. Mind blowing difference.

Re: laptop for DV rack

Obviously the quality of a good monitor is going to far exceed anything on any laptop computer.

I was just talking about pixel count. Nobody's trying to compare a laptop screen to a big plasma or anything like that. But the question was "Is a laptop screen capable of the same res as the DVX?" And the answer is just a mathematical response: laptop screens are big enough to show every pixel in a DV frame.

Why would you expect these two to compare? It's a completely different technology, completely different price points, and completely different devices.

The point of DV rack is to be exactly what you say it is, a field monitor...not a presentation monitor. You don't go watch your dailies on a 9" sony...you go to a projection booth. It's not a videocard factor, its a display technology factor.

I understand that the image should be downsized when in the "rack" mode, but in full screen mode, there's not as much need for CC, zebras and the like. With so much less going on visually, I would think the hardware could afford to display the full pixel data with low latency. For me, this is the obvious way in which the software should function.

Re: laptop for DV rack

I don't quite get it. I would sum up the qualities of DV Rack in it's monitor (that simulates a NTSC field monitor), the scopes, and the recorder. Now besides the monitor (wich doesn't seem to work well), I don't see why is it any better than FCP or at leas, why is it 300 dollars better. Jus plug your camera to FCP, put it in non controllable device, and open the capture window. Audio levels (Ok, not an audio scope), video scopes, a preview monitor that displays underscan and the recorder with capture now. Don't vegas and premiere have those features as well?
