Laptop doesn't detect video device

Last night I connected my dvx100 to a friend's laptop (Dell inspiron 6400) via firewire but nothing happened and the device wasn't detected by xp sp2.
I know it's been asked a zillion times, I read everything about capture problems not only in dvx forums but in every other site I could find, but no gain.
It has nothing to do with the cable, camcorder port or laptop port,...I've checked them all.
I guess it's because of service pack 2 as it's been mentioned in some threads, and I know there's a patch for firewire problems, but I guess it only deals with drop frames and does nothing about detection problems.
So, suppose xp is guilty, what should I do?
I read about some solutions but none of them were reliable...
Does anyone's dealt with the same problem and knows of some "practical" way to fix it?
I know about replacing sp1 IEE drivers, installing the patch, but...is there something else you can think of?

Here are two possible fixes:
1) Windows was treating your firewire connection like a network connection and automatically firewalled itself. You can fix the problem on the firewire connection only by going to Start/Control panel/Network connections and then right clicking on the firewire, 1394 connection. Then left click on properties, the advanced tab and uncheck the protect my computer button. That will take the firewall off of just the firewire if you want to keep your network connection safe.

2) Try this link for a bunch of firewire patches/fixes for sp2:
