laptop as monitor?

how do you hook up a macbook to the camera as a kinda handheld monitor?

Its a good idea, ive tried and it works. But better I believe would be something small like this:

With a USB & Firewire HDD connected to it, having the Cam connected to the HDD via FW and the HDD to the notebook via USB. Use a capture program and start live recording to the HDD. Hows that sound?? Seems a lil complicated, but once you have everything you need, I think it would be easy and well worth it!

you can't daisy chain using both FW and USB. and you shouldn't daisy chain your camera/capture drive anyway.

Easy? I don't think so.

The Asus has 2 GBs of HDD space. No FW port.

You would be daisy chaining a USB to FW to FW device connection.

Ain't gonna be easy.

I have a Macbook, WD Mybook and a DV cam. I connect the Mybook to my Macbook via USB and then the DV Cam to the Macbook via FW and use FCP to do live capture onto the HDD. Works great, no glitches. I also connect the Mybook to my Macbook via FW, connect the DV cam to the Mybook via the 2nd FW on the back and use FCP to do live capture to the MyBook. Works like a charm. I dont see why it would be hard?? So, since the Asus doesnt have FW, you would use the USB for the HDD, and then connect the DV cam via FW to the HDD and do live capture. If it works on the Macbook I dont see why It wouldnt work on the Asus?

It's an ok solution but you're better off just getting a 7" HD LCD display. Sony makes some nice little flat-screen numbers that are actually reasonably color accurate and more suitable to getting pushed around compared to a MBP.

I've used scopebox before... but these applications are suitable only for setting up shots or recording footage. They have too much lag to help you with anything just as focus pulling or framing during shooting.

Definitely, I was just giving insight as to what Im about to set up. Im actually NOT using Macbooks, but the small Asus laptops I linked above. Obviously not using FCP, but some other capture program for Windows.
