hey everyone,
so i'm planing on buying DVRack, but guess what - i don´t have a laptop yet ;D
and carring around a workstation doesn't sound fun...
ok, what do you need for on the fly capturing?
i mean considering CPU, RAM, Grfx and HDD?
I'm willing to spent 2k on this baby, but it has to perform well, last long on the field, and musn't sound like a helicopter when under full load...!
also will use it for on the road editing (editionDV) and AE...
any suggestions? 8)

Re: Laptop and DvRack...

Hey Christian,
As for laptops If you want something that will last long in the fieldi would look at the centrino chip. I am pretty shure that DV rack will be fine with this and you will get excellent battery life. As for ram i would get atleast a 1 gig. For Grfx card, a nice ATI with 64 or 128MB of Ram will do. GO 128MB if ya can. And for hard drive, If your gonna be capturing on the internal drive, you should get one that has an rpm speed of 7200 becasue thats what u need to capture video smoothly. Unfortunatly the biggest laptop drive they make right now is 60gig at 7200rpm. This 4th quarter they will be coming out with a 100 gig 7200rpm drive. Also I dunno how DV Rack works but I would capture if you could to an external firewire or USB2 hard drive. Those are just my suggestions. You can check out www.pctorque.com They sell Sagers and I would highly highly recogmend them becasue you get alot for you money and the product is just the same as say a dell or a compaq. I think their Centrino Computer is the 3790. you could get a pretty sweet setup for 2k.

Hope this helps,
John Guarino

Re: Laptop and DvRack...

DV Rack won't really be the problem here, I think it'd be very difficult to spend $2000 on a laptop and NOT be able to run DV Rack perfectly. I've got a cheapo $599 laptop with a Celeron D 2.53GHz, a lousy 256mb of RAM, a slow 30gb hard disk, and it runs just fine.

Re: Laptop and DvRack...

Hey Barry,
What do u use then to record to? or do you even use DV Rack to record? (ex: Like do you use the internal drive or external?)

Thanks,
John G

Re: Laptop and DvRack...

I've been using the internal, but I'd much rather have an external. Just don't like the clumsy size of 'em. I know there are some cool tiny "pocket drives" that even draw their power out of the USB2 port, which seem pretty handy, but very expensive. So until they come out with something like that (affordably) then I'll probably stick to the internal drive...

Re: Laptop and DvRack...

Barry, can you post a link or tell me what laptop you have dv rack running on?

Re: Laptop and DvRack...

I just got the cheapest loss-leader sale laptop at CompUSA, $599 for a Toshiba A655-S1362. Not anywhere near the best, but all I wanted was something to drive the teleprompter and run DV Rack, and it does those two tasks just fine...

Re: Laptop and DvRack...

one great laptop that is often overlooked is the acer's

i wouldn't even know about them but i have a friend who is a dealer.

i am on my second one and they are pretty much identical to dell's but for a lot less.

my current one is an acer aspire 2020

it has a nice 16:10 aspect screen and of course a firewire port and a 60 gig drive.

i have an external firewire drive but its nice to have some real space without neccesarily having to use an external.

i just started using dv rack and in fact the registered one just arrived, but so far it runs everything fine, including After Efeccts Pro with pretty decent speed.

Re: Laptop and DvRack...

ok,
i guess the US market is bigger, prices like this for a laptop - i haven't seen them over here...
i tried an ASUS laptop, because i like their MB for workstations, the specs were all good, but it lastet only 70min without powersupply and when under full load, it sounded like a hairdryer...
i didn't check it with DVRack, but editing or AE kept it pretty busy, short and loud...
ok barry, seems DvRack shouldn't be the point, just need sth longlasting and quiet now...
btw when using DVRack as a field monitor, should the laptop have certain specs for its TFT screen¿

Re: Laptop and DvRack...

You'll want a good screen, obviously, and one with a good refresh rate, but no, nothing particular is specified by Serious Magic in their specs or in their FAQ's...

Re: Laptop and DvRack...

Hello everyone,
I have a question about Dvrack. I have purchased dvrack and have used it today. I didn't get a chance to play around with it but my DP has and wanted me to search this question. How do you record to an external drive through firewire/usb port?. Also, he and I wanted to know what the minimum requirements were to do this. I have installed dvrack to a dell inspiron 8600, which has 60 gigs and 512 ram. it has 1 firewire port and 2 usb ports. I have a maxtor 250 gig external firewire/usb2 hardrive. Any help with this is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Dolomite ;)

Re: Laptop and DvRack...

Plug the DVX in through the firewire, and plug the Maxtor in to the USB, I don't recall where, as I only played with the demo version, but there is a menu where you can specify where the video feed saves to. Your laptop will probably run just fine.

Re: Laptop and DvRack...

You save your DV Rack project to the drive or directory you want the files to record to, and it'll make a folder in there called something like "My DV Rack Project" and all the clips will be saved in that folder.
