Laptop Advice (Mac Intel)

Hey guys- I currently have a 17 inch g4 powerbook and i LOVE it. However, this new 15 inch mac book pro looks pretty sweet. I'm the kind of person that wants the best of the best. If I could sell my g4 for a decent price and only pay a few hundred more for a mac book pro, I think that would work. Anyone have advice on what I should do? thanks gents

Thats another thing I was worried about. I run Final Cut Studio, Photoshop CS2, the Macromedia Suite, Office, and a few other misc. progs. I was also interested to know if you can dual boot with windows- im sure apple doesnt support it, but maybe there's a hack.

This move to Intel is a sea-change and while I am also tempted by the 4x speed increase, I think waiting until the early adopters have lost their hair is warranted on this one.

Of course, if you want to BE one of those folks, just be sure to post how it all goes.

You will be able to run FCP Studio, but not until March at the earliest, wh.en the Intel version is scheduled to be released.

Exactly. So, unless you're really itching to see OS X run on an Intel, there's not a lot of use for the MacBook Pro at the moment, IMO. I'm waiting for the next revision where they put Firewire 800 back on the thing.

Once FCP is ready for universal binary, they should have a program where you send them back your old discs and 50 bucks in exchange for the new version.

I'd wait, this version is just a crutch to get some by. The real good stuff will be out by the end of the year, then we can get on with it.

Well, since you're asking for opinions I'd wait till about, oh, I don't know, the first day of NAB to make your decision. That'll have given you roughly 8 weeks of MacBook's in hands of other people to make their mistakes and work stuff out, plus new FCS will most likely be coming out and Apple would be NUTS not to have a full Universal code (or whatever it's called) built by that point. Just my idea. It can't come soon enough. In case anyone was wondering (yeah, right) the thing I'm actually looking forward to most in the new FCS is surround sound mixing. Maybe that's just me though, who know. Alright,
Peace,

How long do you think it'll be before the come out with the 17" model? My G4 PowerBook is a 17" and I love it. I'll wait for the bugs in the 1st release to be taken care of, and see if they come out with a 17" screen.

keep your g4 powerbook for the meantime. i will be. final cut won't be universal until march anyway. also, your powerbook has a pcmcia slot(assuming you're going the hvx/p2 route). it's very risky going w/ a rev. a product. i too want the latest and greatest but if at the cost of slowing down my current workflow, i'll stick to the older technology until the time is right. i say wait until march at the least. but then you know what? 3 months later is wdcc w/ more announcements...don't you just love technology?!

I tried some of these at the expo. They are soooooooo fast. But definitely wait until March, at least.

That's the million dollar question for me, actually, since I want a laptop that will be as snappy as the dual G5 I use at work. I like to use a lot of real time effects.
Obviously, Final Cut Pro wasn't native so I couldn't try it out. I was able to run 720p/24p h264 with no problem but Apple wouldn't let me try 1080p so I did multiple 720p files and the machine never choked too badly. The iMacs (similar specs) did 1080p h264 at 24fps with no problem--not a single missed frame. The G5 iMac was doing like 5fps. Apple wouldn't let me do too many tests, but they were all around really really fast, and I expect the graphics card (for motion, etc.) would blow away the early G5s. My best guess would be a pretty comperable experience. Maybe a little slower, but not much. Apple wouldn't let me do much with the pre-production units. Also, they loaded up the floor units with 2gb of RAM I think, which may have helped.

At 2 grand, it looks like it may be out of my price range, but it's a really solid computer.

Man, I hope what Policar is saying is true. I'm building a new house and want to put in the ultimate lazy-man edit suite. What I'm thinking is a very fast power book, sitting back in theater seating, sipping scotch with a couple of 30" monitors mounted below a 50"+ HD output plasma. Then, I can get up and go hang out outside with my laptop and only lose my external monitoring. Hey, it doesn't sound so bad does it?

I love my dual G5, but I would like to only have one system eventually (not a desktop and two laptops). Maybe I will even finally be able to find a way to run that crappy Autocad on my Mac. :)

That said, once I decided to go all laptop and firewire they will come out with FCP 6.5 or 7 and it will take some kind of Intel/Mac quint processor and I'll be **** out of luck.

:)

Do you think, now that they are intel based, that PC software will begin to be adapted to work on these new PCs?

Because I really like Macs but I want to run Vegas....
