Languages you speak or understand?

English. German. Some Russian.

Fascinated by the Cockney rhyming slang. I think it's a dialect that people make up on the spot, yet somehow, everyone understands.

Some English, some Thai, some HTML, and some of the Snizzle language that blckhawk speaks on this forum.

I'm bad with languages, but my girlfriend speaks four. Does anyone else have a rule about dating someone smarter than yourself? Because that rule kept me single for 35 years.

:(

Languages rock!

I speak English, a bit of French (took a few years in school), and have a working knowledge of the grammar and linguistic history of Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, Welsh, Russian, Italian, Latin, and a whole slew of dead germanic languages (I find Gothic, Anglo Saxon, and Old Norse to be rather fascinating). I can't say I know how to speak the whole list, but I understand them linguistically if that makes any sense (and can with time translate when necessary - just can't do it off the top of my head as I know more about the grammar and evolution than I do about the vocabulary).

Does Klingon count as a language? I keed I keed.

I speak English, a little Chinese. (Actually, I've lost most of it. When I was there I could order drinks, give toasts, and bargain.)

Sad really, that I can only speak English. I admire the people that can speak four languages. I do have common sense though, so I can't complain.

English (98.9%)

Bengali (non-formal form 99.9%, original roots in Sanskrit)

Bengali (Formal form 80%, Highest form of Sanskrit)

NOTE: Sanskrit is the most ancient of all languages. From its sisters, Latin and Greek, most of the modern European languages have been derived.

Urdu (25 - 30%)

Hindi (20 -30%)

Old Arabic (can read, understand 5%)

C++ (10%)

Fortran (50%)

Matlab (20%)

Python (33%)

Visual Basic 6 (70%)

Machine languge Sinclair Z80 (33%) *had to manually input binary codes into memory slots on a simulator {STK80} during my bad old days of Cambridge

Programming in general (Because, there is a differenace in a programming language and being a programmer. Being a programmer means you understand to program not the languge, since the languge can be picked up quicly)

ok ok, enough showing off for one day  :cheesy:

Sad? Why sad? I'm PROUD of that fact! I'm American and PROUD of the fact that I respect my native tounge vs pollute it.

Well, it is true.

Much is made of the fact that many people from many other countries speak two languages.

But the languages they speak are almost always their native tongue . . . and English.

For good reason.

I already speak English.

I don't feel obligated to learn 25 other languages just because their native speakers can speak English, too.

That being said, as I mentioned before, I do speak German, and I did have to put down a German punk who ragged me in German because he assumed I couldn't understand him. I shot back in his language, and then refused to speak any more (this was in Seattle, not in Germany), but I made sure to correct every single English mistake he made.

I was just kidding about the 'What other oanguage do I need' comment. I can;t believe no one took the bait on that; you guys/gals are onto me.

English
Spanish
French(we had to learn it as being a Bi-Lingual country)

ohhh, and Canadian English.

Learning and speaking another language is the best way to meet foreign women...
and slowly with patience they aren't quite So foreign.

Hurrah. I think it's cool to speak other languages. I spent a lot of time overseas, but languages aren't my strength. I don't see how speaking another language pollutes your native tongue.

Tell me, what is the different between Canadian english and American english?

I kno the England English has alot more words correct? since American's use short words for their actions...lol

I also used to speak German back when I was in Germany, but once I got out here I forgot it all lol..

I wanted to learn aramaic too, but who do I speak that too? lol..so I'm going with arabic.

Canadian english is where you sound like an outboard motor, and people from the other villiages can understand you.
But thats only when it is warm enough to leave the igloo.

English (Native)
Portuguese
Spent a couple of years in Portugal when I was younger, miss that place sometimes.

David's right.

When I was younger I idealed about learning another language; but why? What the hell would I do with knowing how to speak Spanish or French?
