Land of the Lost with GH1 Firmware hack

Hi folks. Newbie so be gentle. I have had GH1 for 3 weeks.
Did the Tester Hack according to Luminous landscape.

All I did with that was change the wrapper to 24P. Didn't touch bitrates.

I called it GH1__133 and it worked well. It was PTOOL v3.36.

I entered a 1 in version increment.

I did some nice stuff with it. But I noticed some mud on moving images and high contrast shots and low light shots.

Here's where it gets blurry. I don't remember what I did but I downloaded v3.40d but couldn't understand it. It was late at night. Then I went back to PTool v3.36 and went for bit rate "A" settings.

I'm pretty sure I hit incremental 2.

The camera digested it and then when I went to shoot the camera would not let me go into record mode. It would not let me take a still.

I have since spent 8 hours getting the camera to come back. No such luck.
I've tried every iteration of increment changes and back versions.

Every time I put in a new card with a new bin # on it I get a message reading: "No valid picture to play."

I have used full batteries.

At this point I'm wondering if there is a factory reset button that I don't know about.

Baring that, is there a way to go back to old firmware without knowing the number of the incremental.

Thanks in advance.

Chris

After you hacked it the first time with version increment checked the subsequent times you do it you only have to check Prevent Version Compare only. I haven't have to do it yet but I believe thats the procedure. As for going back to the original firmware there is a way to do it but again I haven't had the need to do it. Somebody with that experience will have to advice you on that. Eventually everything will be fine with your camera for sure. Good luck.

Thanks John. I've tried for about 8 hours today - with version increment and without and with both. Can't get past the "No Picture" message. Camera is acting frozen.

Are you sure the filename given for the firmware is valid?

Have you tried putting a high value for "version increment" and also ticked "version compare"?

It seems to me that the way it must work is this -

First the GH1 checks whether there is a firmware file on the card. It does that by recognising the filename as being firmware. (So if in doubt, when saving, copy the original firmware filename and amend only the last character before the .bin bit - that way you'll have the correct number of underscores etc).

Second it checks whether the firmware it has found has a higher version number than the version currently in use. If you've used "version increment" before (and not "version compare"), you need to ensure that the version number now being presented to the GH1 is greater than the loaded version. It doesn't have to be an increment of 1 - an increment of 100 is likely to be greater than whatever it is now.

If on the other hand you've used Ptool's "version compare" setting last time, then the version in use will be zero and the GH1 will happily accept whatever is offered as being a valid upgrade version.

Really, with those two things in place and the bin file in the top level of the card and the battery fully charged, there's nothing to go wrong.

Thank you for replying. I did get the camera up and running again. I did not use version compare in my past updates. I received these instructions from Wanderer 63 on Vimeo and they worked when I put in an incremental of "6"

<<<<<<<I had the same problem, take battery out to stop camera.

Make sure you have downloaded the most up to date Ptool.
Make a new folder unzip (again) the original 132.bin file. Unzip the Ptool (again) into the same folder. Run Ptool tick the Version Compare box,do the other changes as before, version number say 5, avchd, battery etc then save file GH1__133.bin making sure you use a double underscore __ .
Put card back in the camera hopyfuly this will work and set you camera to ver 0.0 then next time you can update by ticking Version Compare box and leaving the version as GH1__132.bin (no more need to increment the version number).
Let me know if this works.
Cheers

I'm terrified to do it again and now I am on "A" bit rate settings. I think I can live with this right now!

thanks for replying....

AVCHD is suppose to go up to 24mbits by original design. The GH1 was going up to about only 17mbits. The A settings is an improvement. I am on B settings, 24PN without any problems at all even on Class 4 cards. 32mbits is just a tad higher than the 24mbits max thus not taxing the camera, the codec or the cards.
