LA Sunset Time-Lapse

Okay, so this is the new little clip that I just finished tonight. All of this was done with a Canon 20D digital still camera. The first clip of LA I had to re-shoot because the first time I went out there I had moved the camera ever so slightly...a couple times. The picture shifted just a little bit but it was enough to bug the hell out of me and to get me to shoot it again. The re-shot stuff is rock solid, so I'm happy with it. Have fun viewing. Of course you need to have Quicktime 7 to watch it. Its free at Apple's website for both Mac and Win users.

Looks good! I'm telling you man, you can make some serious money and beef jerky selling these timelapse as stock footage. Always cool to see your work!

Really beautiful shots. Is there anyway to get that timelapse look (with open shutter - light traces) using the DVX?

Nice stuff, as always.

coffee, re-read the first post buddy.

LMAO!!!! I hate when I do stupid things like that! lol

I read the post then watched the clip and completely forgot what I read because I was so intigued.

Anyway, can the DVX do something similar?

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I always like posting this stuff here because you guys seem to really enjoy it. Bluespider, I've looked at some online stock houses and they seem to have plenty of footage like this. I would like to make some money off of it. But for right now I just enjoy doing it and letting people see the work I've done. I will more than likely have some of this stuff in the next short film I do.

PK, I'm not sure if you can do something like this with the DVX. I've never tried and I've only seen some small clips here of some time-lapse stuff. Most of those were done in the day. Maybe one of you could try it out with a DVX. Mine doesn't have the slow shutter or else I would give it a try.

Drew, have you documented elsewhere the exact technique you use for this kind of work? I'm curious to know the work flow.

Thanks

This could be done with a DVX. The easiest way I can think of is to set the camera up and connect it to a laptop. You could then use a capture utility to record frames at specified intervals. No tape needed and no wear on the heads.

For time-lapses of events that occur in 83 minutes or less you could just roll the entire tape and then play back at faster speeds in the NLE.

Disjecta, Sirius is right that I did post it before. It is on that link on the last page on the 65th post. But I can post it here again as a list. I know from the doc you just did about your trip that your wife does some photo work. Are you thinking about using her camera to start doing some time-lapse shots. It would look pretty cool up there in Washington in the summer. I use to live out in North Bend a long time ago. Anyway here's the list.

What Needs to be Done:
1.) Shoot the frames you need. Around 200+ per clip at medium resoultion.
2.) Make folders in an external drive for each clip.
3.) Transfer the frames into the folder on external drive.
4.) Import the folder(s) into your NLE.
5.) Make a sequence that is at a frame rate of 23.98 progressive. (Just like the DVX footage)
6.) Make the sequence resolution a HD rez of your choosing. (If you can't, use DV rez)
7.) Same thing with the compression, HD 720p or HD 1080i...or whatever you feel like.
8.) Also have the rendering set to RGB. (I'm not sure if this makes that much difference.)
9.) Take the folder(s) that you imported and drop them into the timeline. (The frames should be in order.
10.) Render.
11.) Add music of your choosing and there you go.
*Just a little side note. I've been shooting most of my stuff in Adobe RGB instead of sRGB. The colors just seem to look better.

Videoteque, I used a Canon TC-80N3 Timer Remote Controller with the 20D. It has a intervalometer function built into it. If your going to do some time-lapse this would be a good investment. Sorry I didn't clairify that in the list.

Ben, you could always do your own time-lapse stuff and add that music to it. I listened to some of Vangelis's music and I don't know if I was really feeling it. But of course I might do something and think it would be perfect for the clip. Finding music is always kind of hard. Thanks for the suggestion. The hardest part of doing this whole thing is getting to the location that I want to shoot from. Most of the spots I go to in LA are really bad and I don't like to take the 20D down there. But the shots are worth it. The price you pay to live in the city.

Was the first shot of downtown la from the 2? or like highland park area?

Anyway it looked great.

I've never attempted a timelapse nor read about it. How long does a minute of footage take to compile?

-Ben
