LA-EA2 Adapter for Alpha Lens. No Image Stabilization?

I thought i've read a couple times that with the LA-EA2 adapter and an Alpha Lens... you get no Image Stabilization. Is that true? Or is it only when you're in Auto Focus mode?

Also, what about without the adapter and an actual E Mount lens? Do you get AF and IS at all times?

I'm stretching the budget enough going with the FS700, and want to chose just a couple of lenses to get started. Would hate to spend all the money and find half the features only work half the time.

It's the FS100 which doesn't have IS in the body - it relies on the lens' IS (and of course with a lens that has it - like the kit lens - it can be used at the same time with AF, no probs).

The A lenses - on the other hand - rely on the Alpha camera body's IS; they don't have their own. This is the reason you won't get IS with the E-camera - LA-EA2 adapter - A lens combination....

Yep - I should have mentioned that there are a few A lenses with their own IS; the Sigma models mentioned above are the most popular ones. With LA-EA2, you can use their IS together with AF - but you're then limited to F3.5 max aperture (of course, with AF off you can open up to the full F2.8).

But then again, the only affordable one of them is the 17-50; why bother if you can get this range with the kit lens, also starting from F3.5 - but without the additional cost of the adapter?

For the same price as the EA2 adapter you can get the metabones EF one. That way you get acces to the huge canon lenses selection, a lot of them has IS, and a pretty good one, better than the one found on Sigmas and Tamrons lenses. An added bonus of using Canon adapter is the lens avalaibility. There must be 10 or more canon photographer for each Sony photog. So it's easyer to find lenses to borrow from friends or rent from rental houses or local phography stores.

I think Autofocus on a super35 camera is overrated. You get it on the kit lens, which is great for the rare occasions you can't focus manually adequatly. Beside that, it's not someting you want to use often. And the way it's implemented on the EA2 (aperture locked o f3.5) render it almost useless in my opinion.

A-mount lenses don't have image stabilization in general, as Sony's A-mount still cameras have the image stabilization in the body. A few Sigma lenses however do have the image stabilization, and IS on those lenses work with LAEA2.

I'd agree - it's usually a wonderful way to get sharp backgrounds and slightly blurry interviewees.

I think there's one area where the LE-EA2 adaptor will find a pocket in our kit bags, and that's the dreaded slomo.

David Leitner demonstrates it here:

However, I was thinking of the 'Running Dog' video. Essentially, the Alpha lenses with LE-EA2 are your slomo focus puller, where IS isn't quite so important.

Would I have a full crate of Alpha lenses? No. Would I have an LE-EA2 with one or two fast focusing Alpha lenses? Hell yes, sitting next to my Macro lenses and Sony E-mount 'face detection' lenses as a 'special case' set.

Would still be shooting with my EOS glass most of the time.
