La Cie P2 external drives; capture with the hvx?

I came across this drive on macmall:

Does this mean it can be somehow used in lieu of a P2 card? I'm considering moving up to the HVX as every time someone calls about a DP job they say "You have HD, right?"

I just completed my DVX package (Dual core 2.3, final cut studio, Apple 20") and I guess my question is: How much more crap am I going to NEED (not WANT) to make this jump in workflow? A few more hard drives and that's it? Can someone provide a quick outline of what you have to add to make the move for those of us who just wrapped our minds around the process with the DVX? Thanks!

It could be used in conjunction with a P2 card, but not instead of one.

For need vs. want: the NEED would be a single 4GB card and a 60gb firewire hard disk formatted for FAT32 to offload that card to.

But that isn't going to be a very satisfying workflow.

I'd recommend a bare minimum of two 4gb cards, and ideally a cheap PC laptop to offload the cards to -- the cheapest PC laptop you can find with a PC Card slot and a 100gb hard disk; shouldn't cost more than $500 or so during the big sale weekends like Memorial Day etc. Or get the cheapie cheapie $399 laptop and a bus-powered USB2 or firewire drive enclosure, and use that to copy the P2 cards to the external drive; that way you could plug the external drive straight in your Mac and start editing.

Either that, or go for the P2 Store, although I think the laptop does a lot more than a P2 Store and costs 1/3 as much; the P2 Store is really a special-purpose tool. Or a FireStore or CinePorter.

thanks, barry! i'm assuming that would mean that if i was shooting alone, I would have to stop every 10 minutes, or however long it tales to fill the p2, and download it onto the laptop or external? that seems unappealing.

P2 is just a name for the line of drives. LaCie has a "d2" line of drives (guessing, "desktop"), and a "p2" line (guessing, "portable"). Nothing at all to do with Panasonic P2.
