Hi all:
For the LA market specifically, for those of you in it, are you receiving client/agency/prod co requests for the FX6 or the more for the FX9? This would be for gigs as a freelance DP for corporate/EPK/BTS/Doc work and I am thinking of selling off my Canon cameras as I find Canon is a harder sell in my market, more requests for Sony these days. I find as a production company clients don't usually care which camera we use but for freelance DP gigs, especially for booking services like Crews Control, Media Central, hearing mostly requests for FX9. Getting no requests for RED these days and very few for Arri, the FX9 seems to have taken a larger chunk of my segments, but I shoot mostly smaller productions. I did shoot on a Discovery + Cooking show that was shot on 14 FX9s, the camera area looked like a rental company as they had spare cameras for each one so 28 of them.
My research has shown me that the FX6 is a more desirable camera, overall, for me, because of size, weight, don't need genlock too often, but I don't want to buy one and then regret that I didn't buy the FX9 instead because FX9 is getting more requests. Just wanted to hear opinions, primarily for those of you who work as pros in the LA and possibly NYC markets as I do some shooting in NY as well but that's usually travel for documentaries where I am hired in LA. In the end, I want to buy whichever camera will make me more money and that might be the FX9 as far as freelancing but I just shot a gig with it last week (rental) where I had to shoot on the shoulder and drag it all over a winery all day shooting b-roll and fully rigged out, it was a beast, probably 22-24lbs. On days like that, the FX6 sounds much more appealing, even though I find the FX9 images just a bit nicer. I rarely shoot high frame rates, no music videos or commercials so the 120 fps is nice but not really needed for most of my work. I would be buying all new G lenses so the S35 crop only in 1080 isn't a big deal on the FX6 as I will only have 4K lenses and will shoot UHD 95% of the time.
