Komodo is Officially On Sale

Companies have to make customers feel good about spending money.

$6K is a lot in 2020, and no one's going to feel good about paying that much for an action camera.

When you're in Hollywood and you're paying more for dry cleaning than equipment, it's all good.

But for RED, the narrative of an alternative A-camera option is perfect. "And you get to use it as an action camera too!"

Haha, perfection!

As much as it makes me happy to see RED finally tackle this end of the market in terms of price, i'll never invest in anything of theirs. Just personally not a fan of them but I wish everyone the best in their experiences with this new cam. :)

12 stops...always conservative they are.

For me, the word 'consistent' fits the bill much better.

And it doesn't really matter anyway. There is a really simple formula to convert between DR formats: ADR * c = DDR, where ADR is Actual Dynamic Range, c is a 'constant' and DDR is Desired Dynamic Range. Using the appropriate constant, you can convert between numerous formats...

Example: ADR = 12.6 and DDR is 15.2, then your constant is c = 1.206. Just make sure you apply the same constant to all cameras under consideration, lest you end up with FDR (Forum Dynamic Range).

At any rate, with all of these video cameras, 12 stops is much closer to the truth than 16.

Phil Holland is saying on RedUser that the Xyla is a 3200k illuminant but the chart seems set for 5600k thus impacting the shadow stops. Goes on to say that they are visibly off more than two stops based on the small web graphics alone.

You all see where over on REDUSER people are having a power issue with the Komodo?

Apparently you have to power it up in a specific sequence? Wasn’t the release of the camera late to begin with?

It’s not a power issue like most people are probably thinking. Some people are frying the SDI port(its grounding out through it). It all ties back to the Arri service bulletin that there is supposed to be a correct way(sequence) to plug/un-plug the BNC cable between the monitor and camera and when/how you attach power to each and turn them on/off. I believe they’re saying it’s more likely to happen when the monitor is powered off of the camera or same power source. They’re also saying it’s because of the 12G port.

If the original notice hadn’t of come from Arri, it’d be easy to just blame RED, but it’s not just a “I have a friend who has a friend who heard a guy say he saw this on the internet” thing. I have seen speculation that it could be cheap/poorly manufactured cables or accessories being used (no surprise there, especially with some of that crowd), because some have said the explanation of what’s happening is possible, it should be very improbable with properly built cables and SDI/BNC ports.

It isn’t a power issue. It’s about power and how you attach power and power on /off.

:Drogar-Happy(DBG):

I felt it needed a little more clarification than "people are having a power issue with the Komodo". I feel safe in presuming that when most people would hear or read that, they would more than likely think there is an issue with the camera actually being able to power on or remain on(why I said, "not a power issue like most people are probably thinking"). The issue is the SDI port being shorted out and users no longer being able to feed video out to a monitor, transmitter, etc. But the camera itself still works and records, from what I've read so far.

This issue is the same for any camera. Arri had a press release on the same exact issue a while back long before Komodo release.

Simply put, there is a correct and incorrect way to attach accessories via (d-tap, sdi, etc.) prior to powering on a camera or swapping batteries in order to not cause shorts.

The 12g SDI port on Komodo just makes that camera a little more susceptible to shorts for those who are currently unaware of the proper process of assembling a camera with SDI or P-TAP peripherals.

The only time I see the potential this issue turning severe is when those are powering their monitor or wireless transmitter through P-TAP from the same battery source that is powering the camera.

Yep. See my post(#193).

Mitch kind of succinctly covered it in a post on CML early last year. 6G and 12G needs to be able to pass high frequency, high speed, high data rate signals much more freely than 1.5G and 3G. So to be able to properly pass those signals, as he said on CML, “...the protective circuit can only be so strong”.

The Komodo may be one of those perfect storm scenarios, because it has a 12G connector, that by its nature can’t be heavily protected, and a lot the RED crowd buy the cheapest accessories they can get their hands on, so throw in the strong possibility of poorly built and shielded cables, monitors and other things being used on the camera and the likelihood of that happening goes up.

Just casually in stock...

I know it's not the body-only but even these bundles are almost impossible to come by.

I've never seen a camera so difficult to find for so long besides maybe the Raven.

Yeah, I always see the Zcam and BM owners with better aks than red owners, haha

Red loves to milk the "sold out" thing. They're like a Night Club in LA that has a long line out front, but when you get in, the place is half empty.
