Kodak PlaySport

Ok, please don't laugh at the camera I'm using, the thing is that it works perfectly with the project I am working on developing, and it is within my price, and ability range.

The issue is that the sound is always crackling. What's the best way to record sound for this? Can I record externally and sync it? Or does someone have a better idea?

you can sync audio recorded separately,
I have on of those cameras and works great as in-car shooting but you are right the audio is very lacking.

it has no audio in so no chance to fix the in-cam audio, but ive never had any problem syncing external audio with footage from it, just like any of the DSLR cams

Search around the forum. There are tons of discussions on second-system (aka double-system) sound. There's even a sticky on external recorders.

We just bought one of my kids a Kodak that is waterproof and can shoot underwater. Under $100 (I think it was like $70?).
It seems to take decent video and yes the audio stinks on this model too. But who cares? You can sync later, and it shoots underwater!

In the same price range, you can get an Olympus audio recorder like a VN8100 and attach a microphone to it. Used with a group of junior high students to go with Flip cameras. Far superior sound to on-board.

Hi

The word "crackling" rings a bell. I would use that word to describe a condition where a sound card (or outboard unit etc.) is playing a file with incompatible specs. This could be wrong bit rate or kHz or codec. "crackling" is the perfect description of the resulting sound.

So, just maybe, checking the setup on your soundcard for compatibility with the file you are playing might help. Also perhaps try different software to play the sound only part. I could be way off base but maybe this can be of some help.

Good Luck and Happy New Year to all

Hi (again)
I could be more helpful by suggesting that your camera likely records 16 bit 48 kHz sound and your computer likely normally plays back 16 bit 44.1 kHz sound. If your sound plays back okay in your camera but crackles on your computer check your sound chip/card/outboard unit settings. If none of this addresses your post - sorry for the distraction.
