KNO Flo questions

I'm borrowing some KNO Flo lights and have some basic questions:

1. What is the purpose of the eggcrate and gel frame? Are these intended to provide minimal diffusion?
2. Does anyone have experience with the KNO Flo Floziers for diffusing the light? These attach directly to either the 4-bank and Divas. I need to soften the light a bit and am wondering if this will work nicely or if I should consider placing some material, like a shower curtain in front of them instead?

Thanks!

The eggcrates keep the light from spilling all over by making it somewhat more directional.

The Flozier is a gridcloth. It works great for diffusing kinos. I use them all the time. Lots of people don't, probably because on big sets you don't have the cases holding them around or whatever so they will more likely clip whatever diffusion right onto the "doors." The eggcrates don't work behind the flozier so just remove them if you're using the flozier.

The gel holders are for just that. I don't use them much on kinos, some do

1. When would you not want to use the egg crates?
2. How do I know if I should get a 1-stop or 2-stop, etc. flozier? Do you just need to have them available for any type of lighting situation, or is there another way of handling this?

Thanks!

1. When not using the flozier and you want to limit spill - the light from the flos is pretty soft anyway if you get it close.
2. I don't know. I didn't even know they came with different weights. Mine looks like 1/2 grid to me. The other way is to just clip anything else on there you like. I like gridcloth but you could do 216 or Opal if you want something a little harder.

1. When lighting a large area or chroma key background, for instance.
2. Depends on the proximity of light to subject, quality of light (softness), f-stop you're shooting at relative to other lighting. A flozier is going to diffuse/spread your light and you may or may not need flags, nets, cinefoil to control the spread.

Edit: hscully beat me to the punch.

You're veering into some questions that make me think you haven't lit a lot of scenes. A lot of this stuff isn't really specific to one fixture design. If that's the case, I'd start looking at some lighting tutorials? (Not trying to be an ass, but grids and diffusion are pretty basic stuff regardless of fixture. Knowing the basics will let you look at any source and know what it needs to provide the look you're after.)
