Kit lens warning.

A little word of caution regarding the kit lens.

Last night I shot a music video. I was on the kit lens because we were using Steadicam and needed the auto focus.

During a party scene, a balloon filled with shiny gold confetti was popped right in front of the lens. A small piece of the confetti worked its way inside the lens and is now stuck between the front element and the moving element behind it. Luckily it stuck below the glass on the bezel so it shouldn't affect the image but it got me thinking.

I assume that the confetti got in through one of the telescoping pieces as the lens was extended a bit during the shot. If a chunk of confetti can get in there so easily, dust will have no problem. Could be an issue over time. I'm gonna have to be really cautious with this lens from now on.

I imagine Sony could take care of this, if you sent the lens in for maintenance. You may want to talk to them about it, though, as this camera is made for a particular market, so they want to hear feedback from you.
 
I know confetti can shoot out at quite a speed... been doing shots of those handheld canons myself and they easily stuck themselves in the ceiling 5 metres above.

But I think your feed back is very valid here. I try to take good care of my lenses, they are like babies. Therefore I would hate if it is quite that easy for dust to find its way in between those front elements.
