Kit Lens O.I.S.

I asked this before but maybe it wasn't clear enough-I'd like to know what the difference is by switching this on/off in the resulting video using creative movie mode, in the tests I've done I can't see any evidence either way on or off? Is the O.I.S. strictly for our eyes while shooting and does nothing to stabilize the resulting video shot? I've never seen this issue discussed, thanks in advance!

It may be too subtle to notice directly. Image stabilizers help, but it really is a very marginal improvement. Something hard to pin down. I'm not sure what kind of answer you're looking for outside of that.

Subtle is the designation I was seeking, I was expecting something much more dramatic but now realize the complexity of the mechanical implications that would entail. I assume then leaving it on during a shoot would have no real detrimental effects then.

It can on a pan if you stop suddenly, the IS can jump then lock which gives the appearance of a missing frame(s). Best to turn off on tripods.

Actually, I've found that the OIS with the kit lens can help pretty significantly. The more you zoom in the more it helps. Try a handheld shot zoomed in all the way at 140mm and do a comparison with the OIS on and off.

Here is a video, not a GH1, but it does show what the difference would be like and it uses a much shorter max zoom lens length (55mm) than the GH1 kit lens has (140mm).

The OIS helps significantly on the kit lens especially if filming in FHD 1080p mode and zoomed in... you'll notice it will kill those little nerve shakes your hand or the wind might make.... it's not going to fix your shot if you have parkinsons, and it may do something weird if you are doing a pan or tilt so in that case I would turn it off.

Zoomed in I feel this is one of the main reasons to have the kit lens. If you are going solely handheld, I feel the difference is night and day. Just zoom in all the way and switch it on and off. If you aren't seeing a major difference something may be wrong with your lens.

Heaven forbid if you are trying to get video w/o any camera support whatsoever on this camera. But, if you are the OIS is key to passable footage.

I shoot mostly wide-angle but thanks to the posts I see how it works now zoomed in-WOW, there is a difference-that's what I wanted to resolve so thanks to all!
