Kit lens alternative?

is there an alternative to the kit lens for about the same price? i would like to choose my first lens but if there is nothing comparable at a similar price, the kit lens it is?

also, is there a fisheye recommendation?

ps: i haven't been this excited about a video cam not named Panasonic since the XL-1 and VX1000. anyone else share the same sentiments? =)
 
Two disadvantages of the kit lens: Maximum aperture is F3.5 and focal length is 28mm on the short end (~45mm FOV). You're better off spending $100-200 more on a standard zoom from a good third-party.
