So, a bunch of people were asking about LED fresnels. In my travels around the show floor, I ran into Tonis at the Kinotehnik booth. Tonis is a DVXUser member from back in the day, and a talented shooter in his own right. Now he's making some pretty sweet gear for filmmakers, and his LED fresnel was a highlight of the show for me.

The Practilite 602 is a high-CRI (96-ish), variable color temperature LED fresnel (single-source) with built-in dimming and control via iOS and Android apps. The beam angle can go from 15 to 75 degrees, the color temp can be dialed in from 3000 to 6000K with no color shifting, and it kicks out a fantastic amount of light. The fixture is solidly-built, and multiple 602s can be controlled at the same time with an app.

It's available now for less than $1K at US retailers, and it's worth checking out.

I love the design and features, but then I did a bit of research on the photometrics and found that even with the boost feature its still a bit less light than an ARRI 300W Fresnel light. And have generally found most LED fresnels claim to be the equivalent of a 1K, 2K, etc and if you look at their actual numbers are no where close. So I'm just wondering why the manufacturers compare them to incandescents when they're so clearly not as powerful?! I was ready to buy at least two of these but then realized $2000 is a lot to pay for two less than 300W power lights... The original pricing was supposed to be $690 and I bet they would sell like hotcakes if they downed the price. I know I'd buy at least two...but at $967 I just can't get myself to do it. So Aputure looks really good and especially with their remote...but even they're claiming the t120 is a 1K equivalent, but in reality is much less. The ARRI 1000W fresnel (according to their app you can download) the spot at 7.7 degrees 3 feet away is 145,900 lux, at 30 degrees its 35,900 lux. The t120 was something like 11,000 lux in spot. The 602 is 15,000 at 15 degrees 3 feet. So as the Aputure rep said, the LED light manufacturers need to realize they just can't charge so much...hopefully that happens sooner than later.
 
There is a NAB discount on these. I am not sure but I think it is 25% off through the end of the month. Ask around. These are really nice lights, give a fairly sharp edge when cut. I do feel that they are priced too high but they are very well made. If they could price these at $690 they could move a bunch. It really is a fresnel with a decent beam angle range. I wonder if they would do a group buy?
 
Yeah...power. It's a big deal with small point source lights.

This Practilite is really amazing, and would surely be useful in many ways... but not diffused. That's just too much of a power loss.
I have always found the Arri 650w Fresnel to be the bare minimum if it's going to be a key light or other significantly diffused source.

Again - a brilliant device.
...for folks with a lot of money to spend on light fixtures.
 
They all say it's the equivalent to 1.5 K of light but in reality if you look at the photometrics it's much much less
 
I was told by the maker to contact their distributor here in the US for 25% off after NAB but I never heard back from the distributor so I assume the deal probably is no longer valid.
