Kino Vs. Cool Lights

Is there a handle on top of this box? Would be sweet. The barn doors look like polycarbonate, is there something to cover it on the inside? But I meant behind the lamps, to get some more throw.

There is a custom aluminum polished extrusion behind the tubes that provides the reflection necessary. They're very bright just like our current models.

No handle (yet) although that would be nice. I think its a bad idea though as the design is not putting much stress on the polycarbonate now and not that many aluminum spots to attach a handle to except the skeleton on the inside but its not placed right for a handle. All the load bearing parts of this thing are attached to the inner skeleton, not the plastic.

The best thing is to use a carrying case for these. It'll keep them nicer for a longer time and it will give you a place to put the stand adapter, stand, bulb cases, and all the other support stuff you need to do your job. Especially if your traveling a lot. I think a carrying case is mandatory. And I've spent some time seeing what you can check as luggage and what you can't in designing the carrying cases. We'll only have one monster case you can't check as baggage. It's more for the person who only travels around in their car or truck. But it will hold a lot of stuff though.

Richard, is it really out until mid-November to get your 2-bulb or 4-bulb non-dimmable lightweight fluoros?

That's what we're shooting for now. But like with the RED camera which I know you have now or any new products, you have to believe if there is a delay, the manufacturer is doing what they should to get the best product out for the customer. And I keep seeing new stuff I like or want to do and that adds to the time. We learn new information all the time and sometimes we change in midstream what we're doing because it seems more logical and better for the long term--so we don't have legacies we have to live with. Like the carrying cases for instance. I went a long time sifting through the hundreds of bag manufacturers here to either find something close or someone that would make exactly what I want. We only recently found a great factory that will produce what we want, in the quantity I want, so now I'm finally getting the cases I think we should sell.

It's better to wait and get it right now, than hurry it out and regret it later. It's the littlest things that can delay you really.

I like your thinking Richard, a lot. I look forward to being able to buy from you. Definitely let me know when your items are available for immediate shipment.

Hey Richard, do you guys sell the carry cases for the softlights and their accessories? What could I use if I were to get two of those six bulb units?

Hi Abaddon,

I just talked a bit about this on another thread and posted an early picture of a prototype case:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=104127&page=7

I'll repost part of it. We'll have 3 cases and here's how they're constructed:

All are cordura nylon with a hard inner thick plastic shell, foam padding and velcro removable separators. All have wheels, the smallest one has a trolley but the taller two just have a handle--like the one pictured. They will protect lighting gear very well. Final pictures should be available in the next two weeks.

CL-CCL1 Case that can contain eggcrates, 1 455P and 1 255P and bulb case or 1 655P and bulb case. Requires a stand of about 27 inches or less when folded to go in there. Dimensions are 30 x 19 x 11 inches. Has pull-up trolley and wheels. This will be the case to get for one or two small flos or one big one. $135

CL-CCL2 Case (pictured on the other thread) that can contain 1 650w tungsten / 150w HMI fresnel, 2 255P's or 1 255P and 1 bulb case, eggcrate(s) and 3 stands, or 3 650w fresnels and 3 stands. Dimensions are 37 x 14 x 8 inches. Has handle on top and wheels. $195

CL-CCL3 Case that can contain 1 455P and 1 255P or 2 455P's, 2 bulb cases, 3 stands, eggcrates and 1 1000w tungsten / 575w HMI fresnel. Dimensions: 41 x 19 x 16 inches. Has handle on top and wheels. $225.

Case 1 and 2 can be checked as baggage on an airplane. Case 3 is purely for around town use throwing things in your car to go somewhere. It's very sturdy and constructed exactly like the others, but its too large to be checked as baggage given the limitation of total girth on a checked bag of 62" (158cm). Even so, I still felt there was a need for a large case for local travel use and in the name of getting as much in one case as possible. A case like this just doesn't seem to exist on the open market. At least I haven't found it.

My competitor is actually:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/266120-REG/Kino_Flo_KIT_D4_230_Diva_Lite_400_1_Light.html
Plus tubes, duty and shipping.

It contains a case, eggcrate, gel holder, diffusor, barndoors and a lamp case. So the markup is not that big really. I only can use it in Europe, but the chance that I fly with it overseas is highly unlikely. Renting would be cheaper.

From a cost to quality ratio, there does not appear to be anything close to these lights from any other maker.

Can't see any reason to be wanting Kino's over these lights unless you have an unlimited budget and have to have a name brand printed on the side. Otherwise, these seem to be the lights to go with.

Besides, try sending an e-mail to the owner of Kino and see if you can get a reply. With Cool Lights you can talk to the designer and owner within minutes.

How "Cool" is that?

Hehe, do you think he's got the courage to come out here like this in raw, unrehearsed format? I think they do all their hashing out in small focus groups with big selected customers. They might love to serve the indy market but they clearly don't understand it or communicate with it very well.

all right then.

sold.

and i'm gonna post my doggone photos. and JasonFox -- you are gonna love 'em. LOVE 'em.

Richard, would you post me how much the shipping costs to my country for a 4-bank with eggrate bulbcase, and additional (4x5600k) lamps are?

You see--there you go again . . .

I fully appreciate the effort it takes for you to post well thought out information regarding your light set. That knowledge is beneficial to all who are faced with making a choice, and I have no feelings one way or the other whether you benefit from them . . . it's a free market.

But it seems you just can't help yourself. You frequently go the extra mile in making these unprovoked attacks on others. I am in your corner as far as your efforts to jump start a new business but you really ought to re-think this self-serving behavior of ridiculing or taking pot shots at others as it has a tendency to alienate people.

Yawn.

By the way, "Kino Flo" is spelled "Kino Flo" not "Kino Flow", but normally someone would know that if they had spent a thousand dollars or more on a product. Last time you came up against me in here, you were a Britek owner defending their quality and the integrity of all their dealers back on 8/2 in the "Don't buy from Pacific Coast Lighting" Thread. Now you're a "Kino Flow" and Arri owner defending them--against some imagined attack. If you don't think I have the right to post facts in repudiation of purely emotional statements you're nuts. I also claim the right to be satirical when I like too. Where are my facts off on this thread?

Anyway, go check the spelling on the Diva; if your fixture actually says "Kino Flow" on it--you may need to consider that you have a "no-name" light after all... ;-) Have a great day dregenthal.

evidently you missed the point of my comment (or completely ignored your own quote). Basically you're a troll.

Oh yes, in looking across the room at some of my light sets I see that you are correct--sorry for the typo but I guess at least that gave you an opportunity to say whatever you want instead of what my point was about . . . clever.

Whoa, back down man, Richard is anything but a troll. He is an incredibly valuable member of this community and we are lucky to have him. You're out of line in your attacks. I understand you feel a need to defend the faceless CEO of Kino (whomever he may be), but Richard was simply highlighting his accessibility, which is appreciated. He isn't a conglomerate, he's a tinkerer who knows how to get stuff done in China.

Hmm. I think someone was having trouble getting in the irreverent or satirical spirit of things around here. Now we're down to calling names. ;-)

Anyway shawneous, what's up with the RED site? Seemed to be down all tonight at least from where I'm at.
