Kino Flo tubes

Do the Kino Flo tubes last a long time like regular fluorescents do, or do they burn out quicker? Just curious, because I feel like building something.

Re: Kino Flo tubes

The kinoflos we have goes out once in awhile more than flourescents because its being handled alot more. If you take care of them, I'm sure they would last pretty long.

shite, in that case, build me one too.. ;D

Re: Kino Flo tubes

Thanks, Blue!

First I have to see if I can build anything, then I'll spread the joy.

I'm thinking something along the lines of a homemade Diva light. We'll see.

Re: Kino Flo tubes

With Kinos it is the movement and handling that get them. They last long if static, but it is a fairly fragile bulb. Things like switching to the daylight to tungsten really are what gets them(those pins are fairly fragile). but like has been mentioned. If you take care of them they will treat you well.

Alright when I get down there I will help you. I would so love to have a diva like light.

Nice! Thanks, man. Any idea of when you're moving, yet?

Re: Kino Flo tubes

The actual move is still probably a few months away. BUt I will find out tomorrow if I can visit again. There may be a way as Canuck I can come down. If that happens I will be down for a week or two next month, and we really should hook up.

Re: Kino Flo tubes

Is it possible to use KINO FLO tubes in a standard Flourescent type housing that you would find in the ceiling of an office? For example take those tubes out and replace with KINO's? Reason I am asking they are doing some renovations at my job and I noticed a bunch of those ceiling light housings in the trash the other night! The housings hold bulbs that are "U" shaped.

Definitely!

When I was looking at the Kino Flo tubes, the size, wattage and connection style was identical to standard fluorescent bulbs, so I'd have to say yes. This is part of what made me look into them.

Re: Kino Flo tubes

What's special about Kino-Flo's? You can get regular fluorescents that are color balanced , right?

Re: Kino Flo tubes

Hmmmmmm u got me thinking now! All I would need to do now is try to figure out how I could mount that housing to a stand and then give the light some power.

Yep. Walter Graff has created some lights with this idea. He's written articles about this on his site.

Re: Kino Flo tubes

Yep, that's his stuff.

For the background pattern, just take a piece of foamcore board that you get at an art supply store or Wal Mart (eek) and cut holes of different shapes in it. Make it almost like a camo pattern. Put that foamcore in front of a light and hit your background. It makes for a much more interesting shot.

Re: Kino Flo tubes

Now I know Kino's are made for Video/Film Production but what is the difference if I go into a Home Depot and buy a Flouro light fixture and put Kino bulbs in it? I saw some today for around $40. I also saw the little small ones that Walter Graff uses too.

That should work just fine. I plan on doing that to make a couple fixtures.

Re: Kino Flo tubes

ok cool...I am going to look into that. Let me know how yours works out if you get yours finished before me! LOL!

Re: Kino Flo tubes

I made one last week with a standard hardware store fixture and put a 6500K 94 CRI tube in it (also found the tube at the hardware store for $7). It works great. Now I'm gonna try to expand on the idea and see what I can come up with.
