Kingston danger! Kingston danger!!!!!

I have just fried my 2nd card directly from Kingston themselves. I recently posted that after using a Kingston 32GB Class 6 card in my Panasonic HMC150 Firmware Version 1.21, that I got the dreaded "Check Card" error message meaning the card is fried. I sent it back to Kingston, and received my new replacement card directly from Kingston today, not from the original retail store. Per other threads, I decided to test it by letting the camera record a full card. I let it record for about 45 minutes, then hit the pause button to stop recording, once the light wasn't blinking, shut the camera off. I turned the camera back on, and sure enough the error popped up. It is fried straight out of the package. I don't know if it's a bad batch that Kingston has manufactured, but I must warn all of you that I lost critical footage the first time, and this time after testing, have determined that this particular card is not compatible with the Panasonic HMC150.Kingston001.jpgKingston002.jpg

It would seem to me, from all I've read on this board, that if you feel you must buy "inexpensive" SD cards, then probably the Transcends are the ones to use. It would appear that compared to all the the other "economy type cards", the Transcends have the least failures.

I agree Tom. I've owned this wonderful camera for 2 years now and never had an issue until this past month, when I decided to use this card that I got for Xmas from Fry's Electronics. It normally retails for $60-70 so I didn't believe I was buying a cheap card, I thought that Kingston was a reputable brand. I have no problem dropping a bill on a good card that''s proven reliable.

I guess just because a card is labeled "Class 6" or "Class 10" doesn't mean diddly squat.

The label doesn't mean anything, because there are plenty of fraudulent fake cards out there with official-looking labels. Only ever use trusted cards bought directly from an authorized reseller. Don't buy off ebay or off some unknown site, or your odds of getting a fake card go up astronomically.

I totally agree with you Barry. The card that just fried on me was sent to me directly from Kingston after I sent them the first one that fried on me. I'll stop posting about this now and just take your advice with using Panasonic Gold or Sandisk Extreme. I guess I've just been lucky my first 2 years of ownership with this camera, and now that I've learned better, I won't ever even consider skimping on a card. Thanks for all of your great advice and research. Cheers!

After having 1 card die, and 3 cards break apart into pieces, I only use ATP Promax cards for critical work. I would use sandisk extremes as well but the ATP's are a bit cheaper as they are a bit slower than the sandisks.

It is my understanding that the Kingston card may have had some power issue with the panasonic camera that would lock the card. Kingston has addressed this power issue with a firmware update on there SD class 6 cards. The update is marked on the back of the card. In your picture you show N0309-001.A00LF. The newer part that carrys the updated firmware is N0309-001.A01LF. If you contact Kingston and request this revision is should resolve this issue.

I have (4) 16gig and (8) 8gig Kingston Cards and I've never had an issue..knock on wood...

I've owned this camera since May 09 and the (8) 8 gig cards since then. I bought the (4) 16gig cards in Feb 10 and have no issues mine are .A00LF btw.

I shot 45 weddings in 09 with it too.. last year I only did 20 on my HMC the others on my 5DmkII.

YMMV

Oh no...not this discussion again.....

It seems everyone has their favorites and the answer is: use what you feel comfortable using. I have 3x16GB Blue Patriots and 1x32GB Black Patriot and never had an issue.

Well, it's not exactly the same discussion if there is indeed an acknowledgement from the company that those particular cards aren't up to speed and that there's a firmware update for the cards to rectify the issue.
