King Kong

'Manly crying' ?

Is that like crying and farting at the same time?

I think manly crying is defined by what you are crying for. The death of a dog seems the only real excuse... not your bizarre girly hound though John.

A stunning movie that felt self serving if not brilliant. I really didn't care that much about these people even though i thought they were great. Weird feeling. I loved the movie but didn't feel fullfilled. I did feel a bit dizzy walking out of the theatre though:thumbsup:

It's not my dog!

Hey guys,

Did anyone notice the little joke Peter Jackson put in at the beginning of the film Where Jack Black's character mentions Fay (fay ray) doing a rko picture....i giggled at that...everyone around me thought i was nuts.

I did.

There were a few others... something about film stock... don't remember... but I do remember thinking... "I need to remember that line to post on DVXUser and ask what the hell it meant."

Ouch... $66.2M (5 days run; 50 mil weekend)

:(

Let's hope it has good legs and doesn't drop too much in the coming weekends. This one can't be a flop. Shouldn't be...

Update: But, damn, 80 mil overseas at the same time, which brings the worldwide total to 146 mil after 5 days.

I'll probably get killed for saying this.. but... How come everyone thinks Andy Serkis is such an amazing actor when it comes to kong or gollum? It's a CGI character, and he moves around in the motion capture suite. I mean, the voice of Gollum is great. and I realize they take his facial expression, but how come he's so AMAZING? When say an an animator can duplicate the same thing from the computer?

Wow.

Quite an emotionally stirring movie Mr. Jackson put together. The entire time, I was expecting the inevitable, the moment when Kong would die. The "manly tears" were certainly present when he did take the final plunge...

Some have complained about its slow pacing, but maybe that's a good thing (not the complaining). Maybe its a nice break from the relentless action and ADD-tendancies of Hollywood. Same with the soundtrack - I'm SO sick of the bombastic scores that drive the scene as opposed to complementing it.

Now, because I'll look like a PJ fanatic otherwise, I do have a few gripes. First, some of the chase scenes looked just terrible, especially the stampede scene. That just reeked of rush work. Some of the CG was completely disjointed from the greenscreen work. Second, I felt especially restless in the scene were Adrian Brody navigates a bat cave, trying to reach Naomi. It was just too long, and I was losing patience with giant mutant animals.

Otherwise, the director did his job, and you'll be missing out if you don't check King Kong out.

If not for the story, at LEAST go to see some film crew killed off. Too bad they didn't kill off the director .

yea it looks a little like titanic, but did it make anyone else a little dizzy while the camera rotated around as he's falling?

and serkis is a great actor because they COULDN'T duplicate it on a computer. they do facial motion capture because expressions are so complex you can't get everything animating from scratch. it's all in the lotr docs and kong prod diaries.

The young man who was found on the ship and was trying to be tough...was a complete waste of time. Who cares about him. AND PETER THE BLACK GUY LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, it's said in Production diaries that face motion capture is used as a sorta sample/carcass to base the facial animations on and ALL of Kong's facial expressions required further detail enhancement by animators, because you just can't capture all the little stuff (imagine the amount and size of trackers they would have to use to capture everything). You can animate everything from scratch, but why bother if you can get half of it done, by capturing the main/larger muscles' movements using a real actor.

As for Serkis... I really don't see what the big deal is. He's quite a lame actor actually, as you could see from his Lumpy performance (also 13 Going on 30 and Avenger). They could use just about anyone with more or less pronounced mimics and ability to imitate a gorilla after studying one in the zoo.

Andy Serkis didnt just run around in a motion capture suit. He actually acted on set with Naomi Watts, did the king kong movements, etc. Not anyone can be a realistic gorilla. Have you tried and actually looked and sounded decent? He also acted in Lord of the rings in a Golum suit before they added the CG version. He's not the greatest actor the world has ever seen, but hes good at what he does and hes got great vocal talent.
