Kineraw Mini S35

Looks exciting.

You know, as much as I love raw, and as much as I hate aggressive compression, can't we go with something closer to 100mb/s?

Either way, I would rather deal with raw, so this is very exciting. Initially I wasn't interested in the Kineraw because of the body. This however, could be and awesome tool. If the footage is improved upon from the previous already comparable footage, could be nice. It is hard to beat the s35 size for motion images.

Cheaper than the original. Which was USD$6000-8000, if I remember??? So, exciting.... potentially. Depends on the rolling shutter jello, and other important image aspects. But the initial look from the original Kineraw s35 looked promising. Nothing revolutionary, but promising.

Haha looks like they are trying to mimic Red to the dime.
The old cam looks like the R1 and the new one mimics the Epic/Scarlet. It's like a deja vu announcements of announcements- and they don't even have a product yet. they marketing is a (poor) copy of REds- computer models- pricing without even working prototype.. It was fresh back in 2007- now it's just pathetic...

They do have a product and it's shipping in China. Dan Chung happens to own one. Get your facts straight.

It doesn't do us much good here does it?
It also does not change the facts that these cameras resemble Red and their marketing is trying to mimic it...
Even the camera IO ports are placed identically- a major fail IMO. One of the worst things about Epic/Scarlet
Don't get all bent out of shape- it's just an observation. Chinese are famouns for copying products. I wish them all the best but it would be nice if they also improved upon the ergonomic shortcomings of their roll model not just blindly copied. Kind of like Sony with their new cams- excellent job Sony!!!!

There is really not much you can do with the design of the camera-obscura concept.

Considering the F5 headphone socket (direct to ear audio) , the HDMI on DSLR (the nose tickler) I think the ports on the back is a great place.

onlythin I dont like about red connections are the audio in under the lens

Apparently, this thing will consume very little power compared to other raw cameras, it consumes 8-10 watts according to the tech specs on dslrnewshooter, thats similar to the Canon C300 which also consumes about 10 watts when in operation (albeit with a screen attached though)

No phantom power for mics is a big drawback imho. And, with 11.5 stops, will it be much better than what is out today? DSLRs etc... How do you edit RAW dng? Which programs?

This is for Black Magic, will probably work same for Kineraw?

Premiere cannot yet edit the CinemaDNG files natively, performance is very limited, it interprets the footage at 1fps, requiring you to fix this for every clip and image quality suffers greatly, possibly because it doesn’t allow you to edit in glorious 12bit.
Here’s the solution that’s working best for me…
In After Effects (AE CS5.5 or CS6) CinemaDNG chooses to play nice. You can grade with the common Photoshop raw controls and drag the clips right in, before rendering them out in a 2.5K lossless format for editing on a timeline in Premiere.
It is fast, easy and maximises the quality of the footage.
Editing 2.5K raw is very demanding, but with this method you won’t need a monster computer. The lossless files don’t use complex compression algorithms.

Thanks for the info. After Effects is an awesome program but I do not think I want to run all of my footage through it. Quite a tedious workflow compared to an NLE. But the quality would be better I am sure.

I like the box shape/ I hate DSLR formfactors. Now if BMCC came in this shape, with an S35 sensor at around 4K, I'd buy one.

The biggest handicap for the Mini Kineraw is that many people were unimpressed with the IQ of the early Kineraw S35 and are assuming that the Mini Kineraw will be exactly the same. In terms of form factor its a Scarlet clone, which I could live with. If this did an honest 12 stops DR and solved rolling shutter issues (which supposedly were being worked on in the s35) it could be a contender, especially at the $3k price point. It looks like they are also taking the worst part of the Red design philsophy--super modularity, the front page of the Kinifinity site has a number in Chinese Yuan that exchanges to about $3300, but I'm pretty sure that's just for the stripped down "brain" a-la Scarlet.

speaking of copying red...did you guys see the total side handle knock off in their front page renders? I am totally down for saving some cash (for an inferior product) but this is totally going to be like back in the day when people would buy fake oakleys...wow, just realized what a perfect example that was.

Be careful. Design Patents only protect precise originality. And never assume that a licensing fee has not been paid to the inventor. Getting the patent for an original in hand is key

I remember reading somewhere that the jello on the original was atrocious. Hopefully this new camera offers the ability to switch to a global shutter!
