KILLER WAVE??

Re: KILLER WAVE??

What the hell is a dimmack? And what the hell is bettleporn?

I do agree with what many of you said. I myself work for a news organization and somethings stories do get twisted just for ratings sake, which I find really sad. Reailty TV has also gone out of control. Nothing is reality anymore. Its unfortunate that news has become this way. I rather spend my time watching sponge bob square pants than CNN.

Oh, did someone say porn?  ;)

Re: KILLER WAVE??

Regarding ratings: You probably have sensed what I think of them, but here is a theory (my buddy Albert calls it a thought experiment):

Suppose that people on the planet are unequally divided between smart and stupid, with 80% of population smart and 20% stupid.

Suppose I am a network programmer, and I really want to get my rating high.

Suppose all the smart people have diverse interests, are capable of critical thought (hey, isn't that the definition of intelligence?), and will form opinions based on multiple inputs.

Suppose all the stupid people will take everything I present to them at face value.

It is quite obvious that smart people will not watch my programs as often, and my rating will suffer.

All I need to do is to identify who the stupid people are, what their tastes are, and cater to them.

I am serving a tiny minority of population, but if I am just a teeny bit better at this than my competition, my ratings (i.e., advertising $$$) will go through the roof.

And this, my friends, is how modern politician, advertiser, network programmer or an entertainment business manager must think if he wants to stay in business. It's a sad world.

Vast majority of people is underserved, while the popular culture created and distributed by the big media is going down the drain. And we are just watching as it happens...

Re: KILLER WAVE??

I've never heard it put that way before, Jerry. But I too believe we, too often, cater to the lowest common denominator.  We dumb things down so that nobody is left out and can reach a larger audience. Thus hendering the evolutionary progress of our intellect. :'(

But sometimes I am happy when things are dumbed down, or else I would be left out. ???

In marketing we love uneducated consumers because they're easily manipulated by our advertising. But I know some businesses and film producers who LOVE educated people because they know they have the best product and only educated, well informed people, would know it.

I could use the DVX100 as an example but I would be tooting my own camera.

;D
I am a software engineer by day (I guess that explains all that time I spend on dvxuser.com. It clears up my mind ;)). I use a programming language called Smalltalk. What we say about those who don't use it (or want us to use something else, as is the case where I work)?

They just don't know what they don't know...

Re: KILLER WAVE??

I think television as a medium in today's fast-paced world has little choice but to package and compartmentalize our news.

I choose to read newspapers to compensate for the soundbite-length information provided through televised news. I don't blame television for the compacting of information, but do take exception to the sensationalism facet of its presentation.

The evening news ain't a great format for presenting complex concepts and challenging subject matter. Feature-length documentary and news programs do a better job, though those are often the cumulative interpretation of one or two people!

For all its flaws, I think we are all more connected to world events through the Internet. Don't believe everything you see or read is still the rule of the day!

Re: KILLER WAVE??

This website is all the connection I need ;D

I just hit PLATINUM status BABY!!!

Now if I can only get my creditcard to do the same...

Re: KILLER WAVE??

Actually, this site is not even real. It's been packaged and delivered just to you by our staff in an undisclosed location in the state of Virginia, just to prove to you that anything you believe in is virtual and have no reflection in reality whatsoever.

Thank you for listening, though...

Re: KILLER WAVE??

Accept the above as my congratulations to your new status. There is nothing new to learn for you. From now on, you will be teaching 'the others'.

Re: KILLER WAVE??

;D Funny Dakota.

Thanks Jerry. I always knew there was something not right with this site. You never see Jarred and the CIA in the same forum at the same time? Coincidence? I think NOT!

Re: KILLER WAVE??

As I said - you have it all figured out!

Now you also know why sometimes Jarred disappears for a long period of time. That's when he gets deployed on a mission.

He can't even log on from the distant location because the logged IP could blow his cover... never mind the lack of electricity and cable modems where he works!
