KILLER WAVE??

Re: KILLER WAVE??
Terry,

Don't get me wrong on the Killer Bees / tsunami quote - my point is that "KILLER WAVES" is not a scientific interpretation but fantastic, hyped graphic that sensationalizes the tragic events being reported.

Now, I certainly was stretching a bit on the 5 year old comment generalization - my own 6-year old didn't know the word until this week and she's no dummy.  ;)
Thanks for the clarification. I must admit, it was that line that drew my ire.

Still, a 2" graphic KILLER WAVES made up of frame-grabbed flood footage on my 27" monitor proclaiming disaster certainly crosses some fact reporting ethical boundaries.  The media is not always responsible for what happens in the world, and I certainly don't blame the media for a tsunami.

Now, I'm rarely in a position to dictate what anyone watches, but I do have the right as a US citizen to call foul when something crosses the line.  I happen to think that television news reporting has eroded (in my lifetime) from feature story quality subject study into sensational propaganda and agenda pushing.  We are quickly fed information through soundbites and music video length edits - and are expected or expect to be able to - form views and opinions based on this limited and strictly formatted material.

I do indeed think there is a problem and we can do better.  This is why I take the time to read the NY Times; Washington Post; SF Gate and Christian Science Monitor throughout the week and have NPR or BBC WorldService droning on behind me as I work.

I don't proclaim to know anything about anything, but I do wish to be informed in a responsible way befitting someone who invests their time to be so.

What do you think?

Well said. I agree with your comments. TV news reporting has definitely undergone major technological changes since the first Gulf War. There seems to be soooo much info out there that it's impossible to soak up everything and still live a life.

I hate that *every* news station *has* to have text scrolling across the lower third complete with accompanying graphics to feed our ADD tendencies. Even local news stations are getting in on the fun.

Re: KILLER WAVE??

From the wire in my own house:

My 6-year old daughter has already forgotten what a tsunami is... so much for that generalization!

::)

I appreciate your use of sarcasm in this example; but, yes, althoguh NOT illegal, sarcasm is one of the first things that can make a thread go south.

No harm, no foul. I'm glad everyone can be cool.

Re: KILLER WAVE??

Two things we have created in the past few years are news junkies and coffee junkies. I quit watching the news a long time ago because 90 % of the stories boil my blood and a lot of it I truly have no need to know. Big stories 911, earthquakes volcanoes what have you will get to me via the proverbial grapevine. But the endless barage of babies found in dumpsters and nutbars going on shooting sprees are stories I can live without. I'm not hiding my head in the sand, I just think a lot of news stories have no place in my head.

Re: KILLER WAVE??

I agree and am the same way.

I don't even watch the news anymore (sans the big ones as Mino stated). I don't want to hear about it; not at all a sand dweller, I just have enough drama in my life than to here about some mother in Arkansas who killed her two 3 years olds.

Re: KILLER WAVE??

I'd rather spent all that time browsing DVXUser.com than watching CNN.

Hey - that's a cool bumper sticker:

[glow=yellow,2,300]I'D RATHER BE BROWSING DVXUSER.COM[/glow]

Taking orders NOW! :)

Same here. I've read somewhere that the crime rates in North America have been steadily declining for the last thirty years, but generally the public feels less secure now than they did in 70s. I guess it's hearing that sort of stories...

I think public transport is one of the safest places in the city, but I have frequent debates with my wife whether to let our daughter to take subway to visit her friends... Guess who of us watches TV more often? 8)

Re: KILLER WAVE??

Actually if I had my way I'd throw the glass tit right off the freaking balcony and live happilly ever after.

Or to what you are watching on it... ;D

Re: KILLER WAVE??

It's an old expression that references the fact that we are pacified by the boob tube / tv like mama's breast.

I too feel the same way...

But what is really p..i... me off is what all those TV networks do with the information...They can't just tell the story without packaging it to suit their humongous appetite for ratings. It is not anymore a question of who got the best story but who can make the best show with it.

It is very sad to see that news on TV became just entertainment......

Re: KILLER WAVE??

Terry, Overland, Jerry, Mino, Pierre, and John - I love intellectual discussions with people who actually HAVE opinions. Thanks! I'm not always the most informed and I ain't very book smart, so all of you (together) form the greatest resource, and the biggest library on the planet. I just want to tap in to it every day and learn something new (and find free porn). Or read an opinion that makes me rethink my own. People from all over the world coming together, for a common reason, to talk about the things they love, ..and sometimes hate.

Terry, I enjoy your posts as well. And my words sometimes do come across as "all high and mighty." But that's not at all how I intend it to come out. Maybe it's because I've been teaching at a Thai college for the last 2 years and I have to talk to my students (and principle) like they are 4 year olds. There is no discipline, no structure, and no responsibility (I'm referring to the administration as well).  I apologize if that's how my posts are viewed.  Wish there was a button I could push or maybe a "right click" option, that could change what I'm typing into something more appealling to people. I'll learn. This site has taught me a lot. I'm sure "plays well with others"  is just a matter of time.

Thanks everyone for making this site great and for opening my eyes, ...and my heart.

I have to go, ...there's something in my eye (again).  :'(

Re: KILLER WAVE??

The whole genre has been allmost subliminally created while we WERE watching. Sometimes I'd like to blame the networks or the endless search for ratings and wealth but in the long run we are ultimately responsible. We can all choose to read a book, take up a hobby and deny the the ratings they fight so hard to atain. We choose what we're seved up on tv by wether or not we pay attention. Television as a whole is an incredible social barometer and that scares me more than anything.

hey PK I love you're honesty. So many people surf smut like crazy and deny it like they denied mastubating years ago. ;)

Re: KILLER WAVE??

Let me talk to your wife, John. I'll show her where she can check to see what you've been viewing. That will slap you into shape! I told my employees I have a way to monitor their internet surfing while I'm away from the shop. There were no problems after that.

Dd you notice something? The word "porn" was mentioned and Bluespider didn't come a runnin'. He's like the boogey man, say "porn" 3 times and he appears. ;)

Re: KILLER WAVE??

Acutally, playboy type stuff can be nice eye candy but anything beyond that is way too much info for me.
