Hey guys... I got this project next in line for production. I´ve never worked with the AF100 ( I just bought it and got it a couple of days ago). Im doing this project which is very important for me. I got it all set up to shoot it with RED cam, but as Im looking at the AF100 footage... I think it might be doable with the AF... What do you guys think?

Here is the link to the project so you could take a look. (feel free to pledge if you like it).

What do you guys think??? RED or AF???

"We want to spare no quality in shooting this short film so we will shoot it with the Red Cam, a camera that we´ve used before and find it amazing to work with." you say..

Well, I think if its saving money for the VFX the AF101 gives a lot with a small team. You can shoot fast and if you master the camera.. well it doesn't let me down ;) just be sure you trust the settings and not the LCD, white balance is perfect if you do it against a white board and set the zebra to 85-90 and don't let it show up on the motive what so ever. Then you get the best result.

From what red projects I've seen in Sweden, everyone could have been done exactly as good with AF101.

I think your biggest decision will be whether you need 4K or 2K?
Do you need to overcrank more than 50 or 60 fps
if you would prefer 4K and the option of up to 120 fps then go for the RED
If you want 2K, to hand hold and shoot fast, then test the AF100

Having worked with both red and af100, and worked in VFX for a few years, I'd say if you could creatively constrain yourself to 1080p and use all the money your going to save with an AF you'd be much better off in the end.

Why?
1. VFX work at 4k is difficult and resource intensive
2. AF100 allows you to shoot quickly. Red is fast, but not the same as Af100. All your support equipment is about a magnitude larger.
3. If this is a new project for you, (and your backers on kickstarter) put most of the money your asking for towards the merit and aesthete of the project rather than owning equipment at the end of the day.

Thank you very much for your advice guys. I guess my main concern about this is, Could I really achieve the same film look in the AF that with the RED??? Ive shot 2 feature films in the past. One with 35mm film and the other one in RED (the first film in Latin America to be shot entirely on RED) and I was really surprised on the RED´s final look. It does look like a film camera. Is this doable with the AF? I dont mind the difference between 4k and 2k so the main concern is the FILM LOOK... what do you think???

Best

With good glass, good lighting, proper exposure you will have a beautiful image with the AF100. Shooting with a RED camera does not automatically mean it will look amazing or film-like. I have seen people shoot awful footage with a RED cam.I honestly wouldn't even think of shooting RED unless the production both warranted it AND was being backed by a company that was going to financially cover the cost. Even then, I'd look at the Alexa first.

Can you tell me why would you choose the Alexa over the RED? and do you think with professional lighting could you achieve the same Film Look with the AF than with the RED???

My choice of Alexa over RED is mostly about personal preference regarding post workflow and ARRI have been around a long time, making robust camera systems. RED cams are still ongoing experiments, as far as I'm concerned. Here's what you should really be asking yourself: do you have the budget for proper lighting and audio as well as a RED camera, or are you going to skimp on lighting and audio in order to manipulate the budget to allow for the RED? Honestly, if Kickstarter is how the film is being funded, then you likely are not going to have a lush budget. you'll be better off with the AF100 and using the other funds to rent good cine lenses, pro lighting and audio. You can shoot with a nice flat profile on the AF100 to give you room to manipulate in post. I severely doubt the results will leave you with regret.

Dude, that is one amazing project. I thought your trailer was smoking. I don't know. I own the AF-100 and have been in a few things shot on RED. I love the look of the AF-100 but I think that if you have the post capacity to work with the RED, and you can afford it for the project, I bet it would give you more freedom to push things around in post. That's it's strong suit, right? Did you see Knowing? That was RED and it did nicely for the type of work you're doing. It just seems to me that you could use it. If you do shoot it with the AF100, please come back and tell us how it went and show us some of your amazing artwork.
