Key Lights

Well... first of all, there is no such instrument as a "key light". The term is used for ANY light that is used as the "primery" light...or key light. The key light is usually the main light on the subjects face. It could be a hard light like a fresnel lens light... Or it even could be a soft box light. It's all about how it's used. Soft lights are very much in vogue today, so I often will use a softbox as a key light. Sometimes I may use a Par can light. I may or may not use a lesser light as a Fill. A back light may be up high or down low to the side as a "kicker" light. The type of light I use will be determined by the "look" I want to achieve. So you see, one does not purchase a key light.

You can go with an Arri 650 or an Arri 1k for a nice complement to the 300. If you do the 1k you might want to consider also getting a soft box to give you more options. My preferred 3 way lighting kit is Arri 150W 300W and have the option of a 1k or 650
