Kevin Smith's Too Fat to Fly!!!

They must be tightening those restrictions...or just being arbitrary. I've flown with people way bigger than that.

I don't think he's that big. His armrest was comfortably down.

Shoulders are more of a liability than asses or belly's when flying. My gut and ass easily fit in my seat, but it's my shoulders. I always take the window so I can lean into it. In the aisle I get abused by the flight attendants' carts.

I always avoid other broad shouldered men.

Once I had to sit next to a professional wrestler who was wearing short sleeves who had just shaved his arms as part of his body builder look for a rastlin' match he'd had that weekend. That was hell. I had the window, but he was in the middle and even with me pressed against the fuselage his spilling-over-the-armrest stubble chaffed me unmercifully for the duration of the flight.

Guy had like 6% body fat. It's shoulders not asses.

Holy Smokes... Kevin Smith is flying Southwest?

Hey I love Southwest for getting where I need to go for cheap... but I'm no Kevin Smith.

There are definitely more comfortable airlines out there (with seat choices, etc.)... regardless of your weight.

Next thing you know we're going to be reading about some director getting thrown off GreyHound.

well it must be true he said not too long ago in an interview that he was so fat that when he sat on a toilet it broke. he's gotten fatter as he gotten older.

You shulda told him to keep his gawdamn arms to himself or you'll kick his ass.

That's what I woulda done. :D

There was an article on Consumerist the other day talking about how some airlines make overweight people buy a second seat but then don't actually book the two seats together (Southwest doesn't have assigned seats, so it wasn't SWA). It wasn't the comfort of the passengers they had in mind, they just wanted to sell two seats.
Southwest said on their site that Kevin Smith normally does buy two seats. But this was a special case because he went "standby" to get on an earlier flight. And only one seat was available.

So it's really not all that much southwest's fault -- in that the plane he was taken off of, wasn't his plane in the first place.

As for why he flies Southwest, lots of Hollywood folk do because Southwest serves the Burbank airport, and not a lot of First-Class planes do. So if you want to fly to Burbank, it's usually gonna be on Southwest.

Hmm... I don't think it's his shoulders...

but the arm rails closed ... and he needed no seat belt extender ...

I meant it's the shoulders that take up other passenger's (my) space in my experience.

I'm just saying, while some lady's fat butt spilling under the seat is annoying, it's a big soft cushion as opposed to some beefy dude's shoulders. I'd rather sit next to thunder thighs than the body builder I had to ride next to.

Then they should charge less for below-average-weight people.

But they don't charge by weight. They charge by seat and then by the size (specifically width) as determined by the ability to put the arm-rests down. And sometimes they don't even follow that particular rule (which is one reason why they're apologizing to Smith now).

They don't charge tall people more, for example, even though they would presumably weigh more than a shorter person of the same general build and, therefore, require more fuel to carry.

Southwest and others claim the extra seat is required for the comfort of other passengers. Presumably an extra wide short person who spilled over the armrests but still came in at 175 lbs because of the significant lack of height would still have to buy the second seat.

I don't personally mind the rule, but it needs to be a specific rule and not up to the whims of a flight attendant (and if a person is required to purchase a second seat for the comfort of the other passengers, it just seems right that it be right next to the first seat).

Point taken.

The most recent reports indicate that the real concern was an under-stocked peanuts supply... and they didn't want to deal with any mid-air shenanigans... after a previous flight the attendants wanted to change the airline's official name to Mouthquest.

He was going to take Amtrack... but the engineer didn't think they could pull his caboose.

Am I the only one who read this and thought, "of course kevin smith can't fly, he's not a bird!"

Nope, same thing here. I thought maybe he was making a movie called "To Fat To Fly". Maybe he is? Maybe the movie should be called "I'll Never Get Up In The Air"

But seriously, I fly Southwest all the time. I have seen some huge people on their planes. Just a week or so ago I was flying SWA. I always get an early boarding # so I can have a pick of the seats. I got an exit row because of the extra leg room. I thought I was set.

Then this huge man gets on and sets next to me. I was pushed against the window for 3 hours. As a bonus the giant man smelled like cheeseburgers. I am not kidding, cheeseburgers. I could not wate to get off that plane, stretch out and find a cheseburger

Well ... he may usually buy two seats for comfort reasons ...

But he was fat when he asked to be on standby. He was fat when they gave him the ticket. He was fat when they let him board the plane. He was fat when he put his armrest down and buckled his seatbelt without an extender.

So it may not be the individual employee or pilot's fault that he got booted but they need some kind of policy like "if your bag doesn't fit in here" you can't bring it. Only if your ass doesn't fit in here you can't bring it. Otherwise this is just an unacceptable way to treat people.

Kevin Smith's a celeb and married to a playboy model and that may minimize or sympathy for him. But what about the non-celeb fat girl that was also forced off the plane in tears? Say one of us had a rotund daughter, sister, mother, grandmother ... would we want them treated that way in front of a plane full of people after they'd already boarded and been seated?

Ready to fly and buckled in then to have to get your bag, your magazine, your headphones you'd already tucked into the flap of the seat in front of you, pack all that up and make your way down the aisle? Hopefully she was near the front.

In any case. Her public humiliation could have been avoided 100%

So. That would be Southwests fault. From a consistent policy standpoint and when it's implemented at least.
