Kevin Smith to Self Distribute 'Red State'

Fair enough- he found his own financiers and made the movie for $4 million. He feels that if he were to sell it to a studio, they would dump 5 times that into marketing and it would then have to make $25 million to become profitable.

His idea is to use free forms of advertising- twitter, podcasts, news coverage to do all the promotion (ie not spend one single cent on traditional advertising) and work directly with exhibitors to get the movie to his audience. It will start off with a tour of the film, it will play in different cities around the country and they will do a Q&A afterwards. Some months later it will go into wide(r) release.

To paraphrase: "We've proven that anyone can make a movie, I want to prove than anyone can release a movie too."

He also calls the studios 'a bunch of jackasses' several times.
