Kevin Smith Documentary Screening

I went to the screening of the Clerks II documentary in Hollywood last night in one shot you can see the camera, and guess what? A little hard to tell but looks like a DVX100. At the end of the documentary they do thank Panasonic Cameras.

The documentary was REALLY good. 90 minutes of pure gold, gives you a real insight into the movie making process, and true to Kevin Smith, was very real, not fake at all. Loved it.

There was a Q&A with Kevin and some of the other actors at the end and they are pretty damn cool.

I would like to mention that I have never really been a Kevin Smith fan until last night. I went to the screening, because I had heard some interviews with him and thought it would be interesting to be at a Q&A with him. I haven't even seen Clerks. I was very impressed and it was cool that they did the documentary with Panny's!!

That's really unusual, because Smith has admitted to being one of those Film purists- i.e. if it ain't shot on film, it ain't a movie. Which is also odd in itself, because his flicks are cut with Final Cut on a Mac, not a splicing table.

Yeah, well Kevin didn't do the documentary. . . a couple of the guys on the crew did it on a small budget.

From what I could tell it looked like video, and in one shot they show him going to a taping of a late night show and a guy is in the pic with a DVX. It could be someone else, but at the end of the documentary they do thank Panasonic, so I'm thinking all shot with the DVX or similar.

It's funny you were talking about editing, there are shots of Kevin editing the film while it's being made, guy is out of control!

Just so you guys know the DVD that's coming down the line is going to be packed, we got to see the documentary, the blooper reel, and the deleted scenes a total of about 2 1/2 hrs of footage. The thing was is a lot of times the extras are pretty lame, but I was laughing my butt off. Very funny stuff.

I think I'm hooked, I'm going to have to go out and rent all the Kevin Smith movies just to see what's up.

Then you absolutely should buy An Evening with Kevin Smith. It's a two-disc set of him speaking at different colleges (doing Q & A, mainly) and it's fantastic.

I agree with Horse, the Evenining with Kevin Smith gives you a great look at what was happening with his crew and productions, and the story about writing the Superman script is a definate must hear- whether you like Smith or not, it is hilarious!

If you have a choice, rent the second releases, they have better extras.
P.S>- Mr. Pillowpants was soooo funny! I can't remember laughing so hard!

I'm glad to hear it's good, I'm going to a screening of that tonight, then another Q&A. My buddy who is a huge fan flew down for this and I am tagging along 'cause what better way to learn about the thing I love? Film!

Gotta say I have heard Kevin interview on radio and knew he was pretty bright, but I was very impressed with him last night, very neat stuff, and what a sense of humor!

Mr. Pillowpants was there last night! And they told an awesome story about how they came up with the P-Troll. He said that the exe's at the studio wanted him to show it and he was like "how the hell?" He was thinking about putting Jay in a troll suit and building a wooden P around him. You can't get that at a Michael Moore screening!

I went to Kevin Smith's "Movies Askew" film festival in September. Awesome night. The panel of judges was Kevin, Jason Mewes, Scott Mosier, and Richard Kelly. He had a crew filming the whole thing with a DVX for the festival's DVD that he will release sometime next year.

Holy crap, they aired that on HBO, and I caught it about a half hour into the show, and I was mexmerized by the way he interacts w/ the college kids.

haha, remember when one of the students got locked out, and he let them in and ended up inviting them up on stage. its a classic if you saw it.

That doesnt mean it cant be digitized and edited w/ an NLE
You're preaching to the choir. But, that's me, and Kevin Smith is Kevin Smith. I also wasn't referring to his editing, as much as his shooting preferance. I asked him one time, why he didn't shoot with video, as it was quicker and less costly than film, and that was sort of his reply- he didn't feel it was a movie, unless it was shot on film. And since he has like 6 or 7 movies out, and I don't, I can't really argue with his approach.

If you go to his site, viewaskew.com, you can find his on the road clips. These are shot with a camcorder, amd were featured on the Leno Show.

An Evening with Kevin Smith 2

An Evening with Kevin Smith 2

Just wanted to give you guys an update. Last night was a premiere of:

"AN EVENING WITH KEVIN SMITH 2 - EVENING HARDER"

Just awesome, it was almost 4 hours of film one event in Toronto and then one in England somewhere. He started it out by saying that he wasn't sure if he should have a Q&A at the end of 4 hours of Q&A. . .

There are parts of the film where I was laughing so hard I cried. I haven't seen the first one so I can't compare, but in all honesty there wasn't a lot of info about actual movie making, just a lot of stories about different stuff that happened in his life. It was ALL GOOD! He did address writers block and a few other things, if I wasn't already getting a DVD in the mail as part of the event I would buy it.

The Q&A was REALLY good and he did verify that for his next movie he is thinking HORROR! I thought that would get the attention of a lot of people on this forum. Kevin Smith said last night that he is wanting / doing a HORROR flick next. Someone asked if it was going to be Psychological, creepy/scary, or blood and T*ts (that's what they said, talk to them) and Kevin Smith said:

Yes.

So all around very interesting, and I would recommend if anyone has a chance to go to a Kevin Smith event, do it. He's very laid back and is willing to answer questions, this was a pretty small forum maybe 150 people tops and when I left around midnight he was still taking questions.

That's the poop.

Not a member of the posse, Richard Kelly was the writer/director of Donnie Darko

Exactly, and he is a cult writer/director much like Kevin Smith, he has a fanatical following of people that anyone could make a documentary about.
