Ken Burns

In the image below, I'd like to zoom in on NY but would like it to be as fluid as possible. What other options/programs are there besides Ken Burns effect? Thanks!

Motion, FCP, etc. The trick is using smooth keyframes and motion blur to get smooth motion.

You could keyframe animate it in FCP.

But I would bring it into Motion and use the tools there. I find it quicker and smoother to use Motion on animation like this, especially if I don't need to hit exact marks on exact timing within the animation.

On this particular image, I'd aim for the center first, then move over toward NY, to avoid revealing the right edge of the graphic (and to keep the whole frame more interesting all the way through the movement). I find it more intuitive to tweak the parameters in Motion to make a move like this look natural. When I use the handles and other techniques in FCP keyframe animation, it often takes me a long time to get rid of the jerkiness.

Thanks Noah. I'm running FCP 6. I've found your DVD's extremely helpful. For this video, all I want to do is zoom into NYC. Is there a DVD/ online tutorial that could walk me through the process of something like this?

I've noticed that. Glad to read the advice about doing even simple photo animation in Motion. I'm tired of my photos lurching into action.

You have to at least give Fotomagico a try.

It's got a free demo mode, and you'll be surprised at its controls.
