Latest Canon Camcorder, Hooray for Listening to what your customer base wants!

I mean, really? AVCHD? 1/3"? I'd take a 1/3" sensor camcorder thant could record a deep color, 1920x1080 Tiff image sequence or something if I had to, but what does this offer that a Panasonic GH-2 doesn't (besides XLR inputs) to the "average joe videographer" or "embedded journalist" or "wedding videographer?" Let alone indie filmmaker (really nothing for us here at all)

Yeah. Canon is seriously making me scratch my head lately.

Maybe they should just focus on making their DSLR video modes stellar enough so that professionals could actually use them as a fully viable option now in the coming days of the AF100 and F3, instead of releasing yet another somewhat gimped 1/3" single sensor camera.

You know that if they actually do release an AF100 competitor, it will probably be a recycled XL-style body design with an EOS mount and APS-C sensor in it. Probably will cost like $12,000 just for the body alone, and it will use AVC-HD, but they'll be tacking on the extra cost for the SDI connectors.

And I'm someone that has used Canon products for years. I'll still probably be keeping a Canon DSLR around even after I buy another HD video/film camera like the AF100.

I wish that Canon would do more with the potential they have. They could make a great HD cinema/video camera. One that would allow them to leverage their foothold in the video-DSLR world as well.

I don't get it. Seems like a decent little camera to me, full raster chip, built in 64GB hard drive, SDXC cards, full manual with pro audio? It's not something I would purchase, but not terrible for entry level filmakers on a budget.

I guess you have tested it fully considering you are so quick to slam it?

2.6x bigger pixels, higher DR and better noise levels sounds good for a little cam like that.

How is this better/different than the XF line-up from last year? The Xf305 looks like a much better option to me.

Seems kinda late to the party considering cameras like Panasonic's HMC40 have been out for a while...

It's cheaper and smaller.

The don't buy it. I don't understand why people insist on feeling the need to publically bash cameras and companies like this. You haven't even seen it. You haven't used it. You looked at one website and said "i don't like that and I'm gonna let everyone know". Why?

Well, to start with:
• A better AVCHD implementation, undoubtedly.
• No aliasing or moire
• More than likely better resolution
• IR shooting
• Better autofocus
• 64GB internal memory + dual SDXC slots
• video form factor & ergonomics
• waveform monitor

(really nothing for us here at all)

Great, then why are you making a stink about it?

24 mbit/s at true 1080/24p. 1/3" CMOS chip -- HMC40 has 1/4" I believe. Simultaneous recording to dual SDHC cards. 32 GB internal memory.

Decent manual controls. I don't know. It dosn't sound that bad at all.

Especially at $2K. Doesn't the XF305 run four times as much?

WOW, First glance I thought it was the the XF100 renamed. But then it looks even smaller, more like an hfs100 on steroids. Not sure why they didn't throw in their 5o mbps mpeg2 codec, but at this point Canon has been less than predictable.

Why in gods name they used a 1/3 inch sensor is beyond me. But they do say it has a greater latitude, and maybe thats where their R&D'S been directed lately. If that were the case, and it is much better in low light with better latitude and new better avchd codec, it may be a viable source for a new Redrock M3, OR any decent dof adapter for that matter. It would still be small, good in lowlight with xlr audio ins, maybe a beefed up avchd codec. It's a tough call though. Im one that prefers the organic, ground glass dof aesthetic over the ultra crisp high contrast dslr aesthetic.

Canon must have something up their sleeve, It's mind boggling to me, and im sure many of you, why Canon hasn't combined their dslr's with a camcorder like pani did. Of course Pani has always been ahead of the game,( much deserved Kudos for listening to their customers.) (It's unheard of for a product manager to be in direct contact with customers like Jan Crittenden (sp) Which is really really cool. Bottom line. It shows they care about their customers. Canon, huh! Not so much!! I could be wrong, but I have never heard of anyone from Canon, Sony, Jvc Or any others come into a forum and actually give a crap about what people want. To me it seems like a no brainer, why wouldn't you ask your customers directly what they want to shoot with? And then do your best to deliver in a reasonable price range. You would think it would produce a more successful line and higher sales. So whats to lose??? Maybe their to arrogant, maybe they feel like " our products are so good people will use them no matter what we give them, So tough ****. Seems corny, but who knows.

Im not going to dog on the cam till I see some footage, specs and price.

me thinks, some people think the world revolves around them ... and so should all the offerings from all of the manufactures

DSLR's and GH-2s are not the answer to everyone's problems .... I work at a place and sell a lot of canon cameras, both traditional and DSLR. ... totally different crowds and needs ... quite a few people are waiting for this VIDEO camera .... quite a few customers I would NEVER recommend anything but a traditional ... it would screw them over or prompt endless support calls

Why in gods name they used a 1/3 inch sensor ...

Shallow dof isn't everything (in fact a long time ago it was considered a nuisance) and there are many many many applications for deep dof.

To the original poster - canon have not 'fixed' the video on their DSLR's yet because their DSLR's are not intended for video.
common sense already tells you this. Why else would the t2i, 7d and 60d all offer the same video at three different price points?
Canon have not entered the large sensor pro(sumer) video capture game ... yet.

Wait... You mean the world doesn't revolve around me?

My anti-canon rhetoric stems from several personal bad experiences with their products and their employees.

I know I can't count on them to do the right thing, I can't trust them to protect me as an investor in their technology, and their lame, half-hearted products don't satisfy my needs creatively or technically.

So, in my eyes canon-bashing is wholly founded in personal experience and ethics.

Now look at panasonic - they actually put a TON of new features in the GH2, and the Af100 and it is clear they listen and respond to people who have similar needs as me.

Good luck to anyone who is still on the Canon-Train.

I think this camera should be pretty good for the money. The sensor is just over 2MP, so the low light performance should be much better than the HFS21 and similar models that try to add decent photo capability...On this one, you can take photos but only at HD resolution. I personally think that's the way to go, now if they just do that with a larger sensor!
For me, this looks like a perfect video camera at a good price. Pair it with a DLSR for special shots and I'll be set. The model without the xlr module is only $1499, and it's in all other ways the same camera....as far as I can tell.
