Keep Getting Error message when capturing using my AG DV 2500P

Hello

I am attempting to capture (over Fire Wire) footage from my Panasonic AG DV 2500P vtr onto my Dell Labtop running Avid Xpress DV 4.8 (software only). I keep getting error Messages as below:

Exception: An unidentifiable error has occurred while capturing.
Exception: ADVAudioDev: DV Device missing starting time code.

When this happens, sometimes you can keep hitting capture and it may work sometimes it freezes up the deck and it starts making noises. Then, Avid freezes up and I have to restart or reboot. The systems works perfectly when I connect my DVX 100B to it.

Can anyone suggest settings on Avid or the vtr that may help it all work?

I appreciate any help anyone can offer me.

Do you start your capture right at the beginning of the tape or do you sometimes see this message when batch capturing, or capturing from the middle or what have you?

I'm assuming that you changed your deck settings when connecting the 2500P?

You might also try giving the capture tool an inpoint to begin the capture from. Occasionally when I've got that error if I set an inpoint it will kick in.

Honestly though, I'm just guessing at this point.

I have the Deck set to DV as per Panasonic's instructions, I followed the Avid instructions for turning off the TC Regen on the Deck. Not sure what other settings I need to adjust. Tried playing around with switching it to a generic deck on Avid but no luck. Open to any suggestions about deck settings you have. Tried just typing in an in time and then selecting an in and out mark while viewing tape then hitting capture and it prerolls, starts to capture, then gives the timecode error.

Thanks again for your help. The system works well with the DVX 100B. Wondering if the 1394 port might be disfunctional on the deck.

I was able to connect the deck via firewire with Windows movie maker on the same computer with out any problems. It is supposed to be a fully supported deck per Avid.

You could try telling Avid to not try to capture the timecode.
Sure you'd have you capture the whole tape as a single clip and make subclips, but in most cases I like doing that anyway.

At the top of the capture window just deslect the TC box on the far right. If you have any timecode errors while capturing after turing that off, then I have no idea whats wrong, I have no experience with a Panasonic Deck.

Sometimes Timecode is an important thing to have. Just be vary aware of your workflow before deciding to capture without timecode.
