Did you do the ariel shots with your DVX??? It looks a bit shaky and I am assuming it is because you are holding the camera on a tripod with a door on the heli open...Looks amazing though..Give us some cam details along with your project details...
Awesome shooting. I love the colors and the intro. It's a pity the cam was a little unsteady in the coptor(?), which I'm assuming is no walk in the park anyways.
Was the DVX also used underwater? I think that the first time ive seen underwater footage from the DVX!... DO the cameras work in the same conditions being under water? Do u have full control operating the focus, zoom etc...?
Well, I've said this somewhere else, but there was no tripod for any of that footage... a car hood was used for one shot and a chair was used for another, but thats it.
Helicopter footage... I'll have to post a clip of the chopper I was in. NO DOORS and it was going 160MPH. To imagine, just get in your car doing 80MPH or so and hold your camera out the window.... o.k. now imagine going twice as fast! VERY DIFFICULT but I figured heck, it's still a cool shot so I used it.
Underwater footage... nope not the dvx, everything else was just not the SCUBA footage. Believe it or not, it's simply a Sony PC120 with some nightrider lights. Pretty impressive for such a little camera.
It's all 24PA shot in "Squeeze Mode" (the toughest part of the project was getting the 4:3 60i SCUBA footage into a progressive letterbox at 24P)
As for the server.... http://www.dataheadz.com
tell em I sent you if you need hosting... it's a friend from high school. Make sure you let him know it's for video.

Hey Story about Kauai,
I was given the op years ago to go shoot some generic stock of Kauai on 16mm for a Travel Company. The waterfall you show myself and my girlfriend were able to hike down to the waterfall and spend the day there shooting and sun bathing ...
Got some amazing shots down there of the mist turning into rainbows as you pan off of the falls...it was great.
I ended up selling the footage as stock for years.
nice. you chose some very beautiful shots. it's not the camera, it's more the choice of scenery and the shot composition. the more people learn to choose and to set up scenes better, the more pro it looks. it also helps to be in Kauai. ;D
everybody, download this - it's worth the wait!
nice island.
i did not find the copter stuff too shaky. done stuff like that myself and it is hard to get a steady shot. best we found was tying the cam to the roof on a rope and use the gravity as our steadycam.
somehow a few shots look strobing to me the way i only saw it on PAL 25p footage so far. but that is maybe the web-compression.
Beautiful shots! I especially like the long shot of the lighthouse. The zooms are a bit jumpy, but I have the same problem with zooming... is a smooth zoom even possible in 24P? Good luck with your book... do we all get a percentage?
ya, it's hard to imagine but all the "plant" footage is from a swamp... the highest elevation swamp in the world... ALAKAI... It's also one of the most dangerous places on earth. Not due to wildlife, but rather the elements. It's the most difficult hike I've ever done, and there were a few close calls that would have surely meant death. Being exhausted and getting rained on, with mud almost up to my knees (and I'm 6'5") and trying to get a decent shot and of course keep the camera out of harms way.... not so easy. I'm sure that if I had a helper or something I could have done better with the zooms. I'll be posting a "behind the scenes" clip real soon.
I'm stoked that you guys like it though, as it is my first project with the DVX. Now that I have a tripod and some microphones and some lights, I'm sure things will only get better.
In regards to FCP or the camera?
It was 62minutes of footage that was reduced to 36seconds. I used the built in remapper, but found I got a much better result using RealViz's "Retimer" The one in the movie is the one from AE and ReTimer.
If you want to do it in FCP... simply pump up the percentage. To get the result I did, I bumped it all the way to 10,000% yes 10,000%
Very nice though, The helicopter shots could be a little smoother as mentioned, but the handheld flower stuff is very acceptable. I would run that heli footage through a image stabilizer program and your good to go. That water stuff my god was beautiful, even when it vignettes a little.
The images are breathtaking. I think using a tripod would pay off, especially for the zen peaceful images you shot. The accidental shaking kinda disrupts some of that. The chopper images are a bit shaky, but they are great nonetheless. Nothing like a true aerial shot to spice things up a bit!
I liked the ligthouse sequence, very pretty stuff. I don't know if the editing is also yours or the script, but I would have other images (out of the water) to finish it off. You know, kinda like a conclusion. Also, I don't think the images convey the sense of urgency present at the script. We see Kauai is a treasure, but we don't see it's in danger. I also kinda missed the people of kauai. Are there any?
