“Tea with the Taliban”
(working title)
a naeem randhawa documentary

Synopsis:
“Tea with the Taliban” will be a bold and captivating new documentary, capturing the breathtaking reality of the everyday life in war-torn Afghanistan. The film will be directed by Naeem Randhawa, whose first film “American Ramadan” (www.AmericanRamadan.com), won several awards, and continues to be screened worldwide.

“Tea with the Taliban”, will follow an unlikely pair, an American teacher from Vermont and a Pakistani born, Canadian filmmaker, as they chart a course into the heart of war ravaged Afghanistan. Both are driven to cross through the headlines, and live with the people who’ve endured almost 30 years of war. Setting an epic goal to change the lives of Afghan boys and girls by building a school in the remote countryside, they face adversity, fears and hopes of the people they encounter, and in themselves.

Accompanied by a few local volunteers, they will land in Kabul, haggle with locals, for school building materials, negotiate safe passage with authorities, and evade the ever present Taliban. They will charter through towns, and remote villages, to make their way into a town in the heartland of the Taliban, with the goal of overcoming the chasm by building a school for the town’s boys and girls. Invariably, obstacles will be overcome, including strong objections by some to build the school, and dealing with locals.
In the journey, the two men will discover their own challenges, overcoming fears, and document rarely seen glimpses of life in a land that time has forgotten.

Timeline: The documentary will be filmed this summer, 2008, and will be edited and released worldwide in 2009.
