JVC or HVX - help me decide!

Plus, not to point out the obvious, but this subject has been done TO DEATH, over and over and over and over and over and over and over...

I thought that this was a forum to discuss cameras, and our experiences.

I am not sure why you would ask if this was an HVX regime; it is not. It is a RED REGIME
That's what I thought. When do we get our communist Mao 'red' book? :Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

After you have lived in a communist country, it will all make sense.

It is. But there's such a thing as beating a dead horse too. There are thousands of posts comparing those two products ad nauseum.

If you really, really wanted to get into it, I could write pages and pages that illustrate why the HVX is a superior choice in many ways. But the thing is -- I've already written those pages, so if one wants to know what we've already said dozens and hundreds of times, look in the archives. It's all there.

Just to let you all know I ended up going with the JVC. The main reason? Longer recording times. I realize the DVC pro Codec is superior, but most of my clients are still wedding video clients... so longer recording times are a must.

I ended up getting a firestore drive for the camera though, to avoid tape based workflow and capturing. Also, I do like the form factor better.... I have alot of experience on ENG style cameras, so the JVC just felt more natural for me to use.

I do really like the HVX, and hope that some day I will be able to purchase it too, as it is the only smaller form factor camera that offers 720p recording with 3ccd's.

Hi Adam,

Since you ended up buying the firestore anyhow, that certainly was an option with the HVX and since the Firestore will now do 24PN, it would give 250 minuts of DVCPRO HD recording. And you would be able to do variable frame rate stuff as well, along with 1080 or DVCPRO50, offering you the ability to go wherever you need to go.

Best,

Jan

An option, but it still leaves you with the task of actively archiving rushes, something done automatically with tape. I have also found the (SD) Firestore less than 100% reliable, and would not like to rely on it as the sole recording media. And the Firestore with a JVC camera is still a fairly ergonomic self contained package, easy to hand hold as a single unit, and if 12 volt batteries are used, all the powering issues go away as well. The same cannot be said of the HVX200.

I won't disagree with the other things you quote regarding variable frame rates etc. The HVX is the better camera of the two in some respects, but worse in others, and the balance will vary according to the users requirements.

 Umm, the cineporter is coming out this summer and you will be able to record 14 hours of 24pn 720p footage at one time striaght from the P2 slots.........including variable framerates. The HVX will have a MUCh longer recording time with a 320gb raid harddrive in that cineporter than the JVC.....

Seriously!!!!??!??!!? Thats awesome!!!!!!!

Adam, I suspect that once you get used to the speed and convenience of the tapeless workflow / DTE, you'll never go back to using the tape mechanism in your camera, and it will just collect dust and other small debris.

Anyway, congrats on your new gear!

I'm sorry... perhaps I've been hiding under a rock, but I have never heard of this cineporter of which you speak.... could you tell me more about it?

irs a harddrive that attaches to the camera, and the camera records to it directly. It apparently does everything a p2 card can, and you get massive amounts of storage!
