JVC HD100 vx. Sony FX1 sensitivity/noise

Man I couldn't see a drip of noise anywhere in that frame. And we were watching a 60' movie screen at the Egyptian theater. No noise, artifacts, fringe, moire', stair stepping or anything. It was a crystal clear frame, left to right, top to bottom. I mean, I can't say that enough times. Incredible Dynamic range from a highlight on a metal surface to a dark shadow behind it. All had detail at the same exposure. I am truly impressed by this $6000 camera. And the stuff was rolled to tape first. Jan said it looks even better when it stays digital on P2 all the way. This is off a prototype, too.

Man . . . I could KILL myself for not changing my shift and making that demo today! I didn't know about the demo today at the Egyptian until it was too late! &#$*&@$(*$!&@*&$@*#

I think Jan will still be there tomorrow, and you can see the LCD demo outside. Aren't they doing a shoot out with all cameras Sunday at Noon?

Naah! Busy thinking about the HVX, and editing. I'll be goin on my 24th hour of awake time in 5 minutes...

hmmmm....

Rush, Barry,

I am a DVX100A user/owner, and I must admit that i was very very sceptical about the noise level and dynamic range of the HVX200...

...and i tought that Panasonic would "protect" the Varicam...

After reading your reports, I am beginning to think that the DVX200/Firestore might be what i'm looking for.

thanks for your reports.

Anytime sir. It's one of those things you have to see to believe. I recommend you try and make it to DV Expo in December to be able to get a feel for it.

Panasonic has no interest in "protecting" anything -- I asked them about it, and the basic gist of it is: they set a price target, and then build the very best product they can at that price. If the VariCam suffers in comparison, well... guess they'll just have to release a new 1080p P2-based VariCam II, y'know?

Y'know, after seeing it, it took me a while to be sure that I believed it. I stared hard at that screen, and I was just blown away by the low-noise performance. I had to watch it on two different monitors, from camera and from tape, before I was willing to accept that yes, this was absolutely better than I was expecting. I am *really* glad to hear reports from skilled DP's like you and Evin that say the same thing, so I know I wasn't crazy!

I had a feeling it was going to be like this, so I made sure the new catalog had every filter also priced in 82mm, from all manufacturers.

@ NBC shooter, just out of curiousity you may want to have a look at some of the latest raw clips from the XLH1, one of the "second Batch" (over at DVinfo) has lots of night clips with low light performace that should put a smile on yor face (i.e very very clean)

I forgot what camera we're all talking about here (in the JVC ProHD thread). If it's the Panasonic HVX200, yes, it's a VERY clean camera. And I saw both the 60' DLP projection as well as the 17" HD LCDs. Both the Canon XL-H1 and the HVX200 are very quiet cameras.

Yes, the HVX. Your post brings up that this is a thread that was started about sensitivity and noise with the HD100... as far as sensitivity goes, I answered that in another post, and as far as noise goes... well, I'll WHAT? WHAT? I can't hear you over all this NOISE. HUH? (hold on, let me turn the JVC down). Ah, okay, that's better. Yes, there's noise in the JVC HD100 image. Is it DVX level? Looks like it. I haven't done a side-by-side with them yet, but in low light circumstances it's possible the JVC is noisier than the DVX. Eventually I'll get a side-by-side test done.

(oh, and as far as low light on the HD100 goes -- um, no, don't even go there. Get a Frezzi or a Pag and bolt it to the camera and don't leave home without it. The split-screen is most prevalent in low light circumstances, and if you reach for the slow shutter, what happens is your picture becomes a snowstorm of white pixels. Freaked me out the first time I saw it -- I thought there must be dust all over my lens, but it isn't -- it's the chips... slow shutter is a big no-no...)

Sorry to hear that, Barry. The HVX200 wasn't very sensitive either. When compared with the DVX100 sitting right next to it, I could swear, was maybe 1.5 stops slower.

The HVX is F8 @ 2000lux, whereas the DVX is F11 @ 2000lux, so it is bonafide 1 stop darker. However, since it is HD, adding gain will not affect the image as detrimentally as with SD.
