Jvc gy-l300

Does anybody know if the Shogun 4K would a make a difference on this unit? LS300 records internal 10bit 4:2:2 at 150Mb/s UHD. I don't see anywhere of an uncompressed out signal. If we recall the Sony FS100 had an amazing internal AVCHD codec with which added external recorders didn't make a difference. Any thoughts? The rental rate for a day is not bad at all where I live, but I don't want any goofy redundant workflow

Are you sure about the internal 4K recording as 10 bit? It's most likely 8 bit.........

whoops you're right. I had the Shogun specs open from the B&H site when I was comparing pages. Now it all makes sense. I was wondering why the highlights seemed clipped in that Delimex video on Youtube. I want to guess that the Delimex group did no color correction effects in post to stay true to the image right out of the box. So then my question somewhat still stands... Would one benefit from the 4K out signal to a Shogun 4K? the LS300 is an UHD 8-bit 4:2:2 profile at 150Mbps. Recording the ''uncompressed'' output signal to 10-bit ProRes HQ make a difference? Or would it just be wrapping a reference compressed signal from the cam? I can't find any documentation of ''uncompressed'' signals from LS300. Or perhaps JVC hasn't caught onto the uncompressed marketing wars and just take it for granted that it's an obvious uncompressed signal

"The Veydra Mini Primes in 25mm, 35mm and 50mm all cover the effective portions of the sensor on the LS300 with no sensor mapping required and the 16mm and 12mm [cover with sensor cropping]" - https://www.kickstarter.com/project...cinema-lenses-for-gh4-and-bmpcc/posts/1137744

this is good news. I own a set of Sigma MFT 19, 30, and 60mm, and a 12mm Olympus. They all have great optical quality, but of course without the rings you have to mod it with thread loops, and the pulling isn't as smooth like heavier lenses. I've personally gotten used to only renting out PL sets. Usually an option of Red, Superspeeds, Ultras, and now Xenar 3s. The whole MFT mount with a S35 sensor is confusing =P regardless of what the firmware is able to compensate for it with the ''mapping.'' I'm waiting for a detailed article on which lenses are best optimized for this cam or if it makes a difference or not. At this stage it's really hard to tell.

Again, all the footage that is out there is from prototypes. I should have a production-run camera mid March and we will shoot some test footage in daytime, night, and interiors....as everyone has stated, we look forward to finding it's "DNA" and how clean it is in the higher ISO's, and how well the 4K and 1080 recordings hold up with grading, CineGammas, etc.......

Another pre-production sample clip.

Low light handling (near the end of the sequence) looks a bit nasty, IMHO. Definitely need to see more samples in a variety of lighting conditions. Love the incentive program from JVC, but the sensor needs to perform as the bar these days has been set fairly high by the competition.

the GH4 behaves differently at FullHD than 4K - especially the color space, so I have no idea what the above video is on about. the blacks are all crushed and highlights blown out. seems like contrast was only added. also the 1lux sample at FullHD serves no purpose along with its bigger pixel noise. Let's assume F4 with the base ISO 800, 3db-1600, 6db-3200, 9db-6400. surely it's no A7s owl eye standard, but ideally lighting setups are ideal...

I'm waiting to see a production run camera in the right hands! I'll make my decision at that time. We're all hoping JVC gets this right!

DITTO!
Though, admittedly I'm not getting a 'warm fuzzy' from the footage that has been made available.
I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve night. All this waiting is killing me!
I really like the specs on this camera. I hope JVC delivers.
Especially since Panasonic called and said they probably won't be able to make it to the party...

I don't even know what to say after watching this footage. This by far the worst 4k footage I've seen from any camera, even a camera phone. This camera is close to hitting the market, so rest assure that the image your seeing is what your getting. Their not able to re configure the color science in a couple weeks. But honestly, whos surprised? I'm certainly not, after all it's a JVC. Did you really expect they were going to put out a capable camera? lol Now thats funny

Why are they even releasing that footage? It's awful! That 90" is going to stop a lot of people pre-ordering, me included. They need to release downloadable 4k rushes if they want to get any interest at all imo.

I totally agree! I'm not ordering until I see an official video from JVC, with a production camera. And yes, it clearly has to be on par with Canon and Sony........"I'm not going backwards in technology"!

I had the LS300 in my hands at the BSC Expo a few weeks ago, and it seems like a nice bit of kit, with some reservations. Not sure if it was a production model or not - didn't think to ask - but it probably was.

Just a few first impressions, but I didn't spend a long time with it:

The variable sensor mapping is really neat; when setting it up, it shows an circle overlay on screen to line up with the acceptable edges of the lens' projection. The steps in sizing are also quite fine.
The flip-out monitor is OK, but not high-res. The image in it looked really over-sharpened, but maybe that was a user setting I hadn't noticed.
The viewfinder is small, think like that of a C100.
Menus and options seemed rather limited. There seemed to be little in the way of colour control.

The pattern noise is indeed bad in the low light shots in that example that Firstbase posted. That's quite a turn-off if present in the production models.
(I know it's +18/+24dB, but this is 2015. You can set the gain on the FS100 (from 2011) to +30dB and it shows just about zero patterning.)

There's a worrying amount of aliasing in fine details in this sample footage. (See trees at 2:20 in particular.) It could be bad edit scaling, but I doubt it somehow.

I like the design of the L300, but the quality of its image seems dubious, at least at this time. However, it does have plenty of other neat features that may offset the relatively less competitive image for some users.
Hopefully it'll find its niche and convince JVC to follow up with an improved model.

Funny, Jim Martin had commented on the camera's 'DNA' and where it might lie. I'm beginning to wonder if the sensor's DNA/heritage are the root cause of the LS300's apparent image quality issues.

This is based on the assumption that JVC is using it's new Altasens 4k sensor.

If you visit their website, one gets the feeling that cinematic images may be low on their priority list. It seems Altasens' core market was originally aimed at providing sensors for Video Conferencing / Surveillance / Medical Imaging.

Not exactly the stuff of cinematic dreams.

I'm trying to hold off on final judgment of this camera until there have been some proper reviews.

Note to JVC: Get an official demo out ASAP! This amateur footage appearing on the web is whetting no one's appetite...

According to another source I recently spoke to............the cameras that were out a few weeks ago were all pre-production models. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the final production cameras (as Jim from EVS and my other source has stated). Won't be a difficult decision for me when I FINALLY see an official video from JVC and when I can test for myself. Patiently waiting..............

If this is not what I'm looking for from JVC, I'll see what's coming at NAB. Many choices, so no need to rush.........
