Folks-
Working on Avid MC 5.5 on windows system (sorry don't know OS level), with Nitris box. This is not my usual in-office offline edit system, but onliner's edit suite so not quite sure of all the specs.
Here's the story. Local shooter we hired for a pick up shot on a new camera for us, JVC GY-HM700U.

Had the shooter shoot our normal XDcam EX specs – 35 mbps 1080 60i. I did know it shoots Avid friendly-MP4 or FCP-friendly .mov. So instructed the shooter to record .mp4.
Got the footage in house, transferred the camera folders off the SDHC cards, and onto drives. Opened up in XDcam ClipBrowser and then used MXF for NLE setting to export/re-wrap footage for Avid use (it's same workflow I use for EX3 shot XDcam EX footage; I can't get Avid AMA to recognize the camera original material without this re-wrap process.) Everything linked fine in AMA and then consolidated. Looked a little soft in Avid, but didn't think much of it at the time - working with a lot of SD material in our projects, and typically set project format for SD/480i.
But recently brought footage into above online Avid suite after living with footage for months at offline/DV res, and had classic rude awakening. At HD res in Avid, footage looks incredibly soft to a point where I have to think that there’s no way the shooter intended that (it's fotoage of hospital interiors, photos on walls, lottsa natural light.) Soft to a point where I’m questioning whether we're really using the proper workflow to maintain footage's native HD-ness. Not out of focus soft but more footage basically looks like it's been down-res.ed. So there's an overall, over-lit mushiness to it.
Have brought into online Avid in multiple ways. Working directly with original HD-consolidated media. Looks soft. (I basically consolidate the already consolidated footage in offline, and then onliner works direclty with those bins/MXF files - so no real re-ingest for online.) On onliner's PC, repeated offline process and rewrapped media for MXF and then AMA.ed that. Looks soft. Have tried var. other XDcam Clip Browser export options and AMA.ed those. Still looks soft.
Could it be that that's just what the footage looks like? Problem is, there's no way of knowing what this stuff really looks likes. XDcam Clip Browser play back is necessariy lo-res/proxy.
Any ideas, I'm all ears.
And if there's a better section of the forum to post this in, let me know.
