JVC Field Monitor

Hey, I'm seeing on eBay a field monitor by JVC, the TM-910SU. 9-inch, guy says he's been using it downconverting from a Varicam signal. For a color-only monitor solution, does anyone have more info on this thing? For instance, does it do 16x9? Is the image any good?

Yes that monitor does 16:9
We have 5 of them at school that I recomended, I have also seen it in use in the studios of a national broadcaster.
It is a very capiable monitor, and is my recomendation for those looking for a small monitor - for field or studio.

Mikko- have you had any color issues with them? On mine, I just cannot seem to get all the blue bars to match up. Have you ever tweaked the little screws below the adjustment knobs?

Ours all set up fine with blue gun and the normal controls.

The screws in the holes are just trims for the main pots. - You can use them to set the "center" of the control.

Oh, hey PDX_DVX.
Good to see you got the monitor okay.
I am not sure how to set up the monitor correctly. There are also pots on the INSIDE of the monitor, like Mikko said. A TV person should be able to help you though, someone who knows this stuff.

Yeah, thanks for the monitor! In the mix of things I forgot to email you back and let you know everything went A OK. I should also say the colors are pretty much 99.9% there, there's just 1 or 2 bars that won't match up completely. I'll probably have someone look at it. Other than that it's great!

So, next question - how are these things in the field? Batteries, what kind of pricing and availability (serial numbers for parts would be ideal). And what's a reasonable price to pay for one? I've seen everything from $125 to $800 so far online. Thanks to everyone for the help!

Also (follow-up), is there going to be any way to use this with a standard Apple GFX card? I've only ever seen one of these CRTs driven through a Deck or through a Kona/Blackmagic card. is that 100% required to view FCP footage thru this monitor?

As it takes 12V, pretty much anything will do, as long as it can supply the necessary amperage. A car battery sounds like a cheap solution, although heavy and not really designed for this application.
I use NiMH battery packs.
All you need to do is make (or buy) a cable. The monitor uses a standard 4 pin XLR connection.

The monitor also has holes on the back to accept most broadcast standard battery mounts, so you can for exmpale stick Anton Bauers on it - but that's pricy for many.

Our monitors 'live' in the studio control room as camera/source monitors, but they get a lot of field time out on shoots too.

What do you guys think of this plan -

DVI-I to VGA through a $100 breakout box to composite to my monitor?

It's a good $900 cheaper than a blackmagic card with Analog-out (or a DSR-11), and a whopping $1500 below the Kona LHe. Why not do it this way? What am I losing without the cards?

That 9 inch looks nice, ive been considering the JVC TM-H1700GU myself. Does anyone know if that has blue gun? the 1750 says it does but the 1700 doesn't, could anyone help me confirm this? If anyone has any other suggestions for a monitor around 600$ id appreciate the help, i figured this would be the place to ask.

This thread is entitled JVC FIELD MONITOR: that monitor is a production monitor not a field monitor. The lack of 12V, and the fact that it's 44lbs (20kg) doesn't really make it a good field monitor. That, and the uncertainty that it was designed for rugged use.

Yeah you are right its totally a production monitor but I intend to use it in the field, just as the original person who posted asking about a 9inch production monitor for use in the field. I don't plan on shooting guerilla tactics and treat my equipment with the gentle care it requires. The TM-H1700GU can't plug into a car battery but I'll be using it long with other equipment so powering will not be an issue.

Does anyone know if this monitor has blue gun? thanks

Well, for me, that price tag makes up for a lot of shortcomings -
Anyway, even the so-called field monitors aren't precisely light. I'd guestimate the Sony I rented for the last shoot was at least 30 with the big, heavy case it came in. And the case is Sorta necessary if you don't want it all scratched up.
