JVC cancels GY-HD7000 2/3" HDV camera (NAB2006)

According to JVC representatives at NAB2006, JVC has cancelled plans to build the 2/3" 24P prototype camcorder shown last year at NAB2005. JVC reps also mentioned that they have no plans to develop any 1/2" camcorder products. Their reasoning was that they see the HD100/200/250 products having strong market acceptance, and they didn't see any need to compete with Sony and Panasonic for the 2/3" camera market. Too bad, too. I was looking forward to a mid-priced 2/3" product from JVC.

It seemed obvious to me at NAB this year that 1/3" HD chips and 1" or larger 4K - 8K (RED, GV, Arri, Silicon, etc.) chips are the going to be the big sellers in the next couple of years. Each serves different markets. The 2/3" HD market is already well established with Sony and Panasonic and I bet JVC's huge success with the HD100 made the choice very simple to stick with that path for the next year.
