I've just spent some time and money upgrading my edit machine, and put Windows 7 (64) on it. All works fine - I'm an Adobe user, and the new machine is speedier and stable. However, my usual upgrade process is to relegate the 'best' machine, and upgrade the next older one, so in this case, my old edit computer becomes the backup (with Vista on it), and the older XP machine gets a new motherboard and bits and pieces and this XP machine is now my main machine. This machine, like the Vista one was happy with firewire in from the cameras and players, but with Windows 7 on it - the cameras are not recognised at all. A bit of Googling brings this up as a common issue, with the first complaints in 2009. The cure for about 90% of people is simply to roll back the Windows 7 IEE 1392 driver to the legacy version and all is well. I'm in the 10% of people for whom this did not work, and I can find no work arounds or proper solutions and microsoft, bless them, seem to have never sorted it out.
So - with the common 'solution' not working for me, I just wondered if any JVC users found a simple solution - or even a complicated one would do - I'm fairly computer literate.
At the moment, I'm going into a different computer (XP) and going from the hard drive to an external HD, then bringing that into the edit machine which is a waste of time - but works. This is a really annoying issue. The Windows 7 machine doesn't like any of my HD or SD cameras, or a JVC recorder, or a DSR-11, so I'm confident it's the computer. For info, neither the 6 pin or 4 pin firewire inputs make any difference.
I found a couple of hot fix firewire solutions on the microsoft site, not specifically for this problem - but firewire stability ones, but the microsoft server was 'not available' when I tried to download them.
I do have a copy of Windows 8 I've not dared use yet - but I'm hanging on to that as 7 seems stable in other areas - I just can't get video in!
