JVC 4K large sensor camera with Nikon mount

What is wrong with JVC? I don't understand what they are thinking. They make SUPERB home cinema projectors with the best black levels and native contrast around for a decent price, but when it comes to cameras they simply don't get it. Epic Fail.

Even giving the benefit of the doubt to suggested retail being a couple thousand higher than the street price...this really is one crazy announcement. If someone really really wanted 4K, I think all of the other options are better and close in price or cheaper and in the Black Magic's case, MUCH cheaper...Budget 4K - BMCC4K, Low light beast 4K - FS700 with upgrades - The Original 4K - Scarlet or older Reds

All of these Japanese camera companies are a bit more or less delusional for some reason.

Like Black Magic I can't wait for a Chinese or Korean company like Samsung to really smack them down for good.

Who would buy that at 9K? You can get into a Sony F5 for just a tad over 18K.

Agreed, I wouldn't buy it at 1,800 never mind 18k, IT'S FRICKIN JVC!! I can't believe their still in business, I don't think I've ever heard anything good about JVC cams, EVER!! LOL

I never have an ounce of interest in JVC cameras and this only reminded me why. However, they make INCREDIBLE home cinema projectors with their Reference Series line (I'm a proud owner of the phenominal RS15) that have the absolute best black levels and native contrast out of all of the home theater digital projectors around. They are the closest to CRT blacks & native contrast in projection. That, I will give them major props for.....their cameras....not so much. lol.

That I agree with, JVC does make some products, their monitors are, or at least were decent. I think that may be what carries them, although, I have no proof of that, just an assumption.

After their dismal HD200 and HD250 real world performances, I have no hopes for any of JVC's future camcorder products. Their pro camcorder products are subpar. Probably the worse pro camcorders mfg fr Japan. The HD250 was the biggest mistake I've ever purchased. Lousy vf. Mediocre DSP. Just no where close to Sony or Panasonic. It is so bad that I will ever give any recommendation to JVC camcorder products fr. 2010-present. It don't know whether to categorize their pro products to high-end consumer. 4K fr JVC? JVC common. Got to give you credit of being the king in VHS tape era. But those days are long gone. Are you for real or just another gimmick?

If this came in at around $5,000; I could see it possibly being used as 4k event coverage. The 4x cards and 4x hdmi connections is crazy though, why not just switch to CF (actually wouldn't a fast SDXC card support the 4x28/Mbs?!)

The pro's though, its really small and light, it does 60p at 4k, it has a decent sized sensor. Just a big miss on price point IMO.

The 4xSD thing is probably because they're getting the signal from the sensor and sending it to four different encoding chips. That way you don't have to create a new encoder, you reuse the old ones you had. Smart. Except it's a nightmare for the user.
If this was $3K and had 14 stops of DR, we'll all be drooling over it, we'd get used to the 4xSD thing and weird workflow, the weird lens mount choice, and all other quirks, and that would be it. But it's not $3K.
I have no idea what the target user is for this thing.

on the plus side, anyone who ever wanted an F-mount videocamera, here it is in all its quad HD glory.

Ignoring the price for the moment (which has to be wrong, surely? time will tell) I think this is a neat little concept, though interchangeable adaptors would have been smarter. Ok, it's not 'real' 4k and the 4 card thing is a bit of a cheat, but as a small, lightweight camera that can be carried around easily and deliver a 4k-ish image it's clever and in a form factor that will work for many people, especially in corporate / event land. I saw the fixed lens version last year on a big screen and it's fairly impressive - not Red or F55 impressive by any means, but much sharper than equivalent small chip camcorders (and by this I mean things like the XF100 and PMW100 - I told you, I'm ignoring the price thing!). One question though - 1.25" sensor: what does that equate to in crop factor? Compared to super16 / M43 / Super 35 etc?

Even without factoring in price, I can't see why anyone would want this. Stitching together footage? seriously. Small sensor, poor record format, ugly, overpriced etc.. It will be the first camera to sell 0 units. If I were JVC, I'd firer all my R&D team, and then the board for allowing such a thing. JVC, at least learn from sony and try to compete with the competition.

How about recording video & audio seperately & having to sync it up in post? That sounds like a pain in the workflow.

I understand why people adopted this, because of the price & picture quality of DSLRs. The Canon 5Dii was under $3k & it was competing with $5-7k HVX / EX1 + Redrock / Letus rigs. Cut the price by 50%, the rig size by 75% and people went nuts about DSLRs & adjusted to all the stupid, annoying, workflow issues DSLRs required.

Exactly.
