JVC 4K large sensor camera with Nikon mount

Yeah not sure many shows will go for the 4x SD card workflow (not to mention the 4x mini-HDMI monitoring)

Plus at ¥1.7m (about $18,000 right now) it's not exactly cheap... Rent a Scarlet as that B or C camera.

Edit: They don't mention it in the press release, but it sure looks like that Nikon mount is swappable with a few screws. Seems like they could've gotten a lot more interest if they said PL/EOS/MFT mounts would be possible down the line.

Yeah, if they went with an SSD, a better codec, and a raw-output option and dropped the price to, say, $5K or so, maybe I'd be interested. JVC was the first with a prosumer 4K camera. Sadly, this seems the worst of all worlds (recording medium, codec, price). Besides 1.25 inches is pretty much m4/3, so while the sensor is "large-ish," it's not the usually requested s35 size.

It's a bit of a head scratcher as to why this camera costs so much more than the $5,000 HMQ10. They're basically the same camera body, same codec, same processing, etc.

The Q30 has a larger sensor, 1.25" maybe, and a Nikon lens mount. How does that justify a $13,000 price increase? That must be some sensor.

The Q10 has a small 1/2.3" sensor with 10x 6.7-67mm (42.5 - 425mm FF eqiv ) lens with a 6.34x crop.

As much of a Nikon fan as I am, this is a bizarre choice. A shorter flange depth mount would be smarter. You can fit Nikon lenses onto a Canon mount with a simple adapter, the opposite is not true. Canon mount can also accept a wider variety of alternate/3rd party lenses through adapters.

Also, jeez, the price.

Ignoring the price for the moment (which has to be wrong, surely? time will tell) I think this is a neat little concept, though interchangeable adaptors would have been smarter. Ok, it's not 'real' 4k and the 4 card thing is a bit of a cheat, but as a small, lightweight camera that can be carried around easily and deliver a 4k-ish image it's clever and in a form factor that will work for many people, especially in corporate / event land. I saw the fixed lens version last year on a big screen and it's fairly impressive - not Red or F55 impressive by any means, but much sharper than equivalent small chip camcorders (and by this I mean things like the XF100 and PMW100 - I told you, I'm ignoring the price thing!). One question though - 1.25" sensor: what does that equate to in crop factor? Compared to super16 / M43 / Super 35 etc?

Hmm, just been looking at it more closely and it looks a bit hoaxed to me. The largest image I can find is here http://www.donanimhaber.com/fotogra...m-yapabilen-yeni-video-kamerasini-duyurdu.htm Notice a few things (besides the ridiculous price):

1 - The lens mount looks like a MTF Services style adaptor with manual lever for changing iris that's been screwed on with little bolts, but the wheel on the bottom left looks like it should be iris control - why have that? There don't seem to be any electronic contacts in the mount so although we know there's no autofocus, it would also mean no power to the lens for VR or iris control.
2 - The focus assist is a big switch, just like you'd have for autofocus. Why have that for peaking? Especially when the equally important zebras are assigned to a small button above.
3 - Is that the merest hint of a zoom rocker over on the right hand side?

I do hope it's not a hoax, as this would fit nicely with my Nikon and Zeiss collection. Can anyone confirm it came from an official source?

p.s. Ignoring the ludicrous price for the moment, of course.

I hope it's a hoax. What an awkward and half-baked product.
The only thing I can see that it has going for itself if the 4K 60fps.

This 4 x SD card concept is just silly, and needs to be killed off. Relying on a greater number of cards increases the probability that one will go wrong. And even if you have an L-shaped 3/4 of the picture left when one card fails, that picture is still left with a great big chunk out of the centre.

I had also noticed the lack of electronic contacts. Which makes the mount choice even more silly. Use a dumb NEX mount, and everybody can use their lenses as long as they are fully manual. Use a Nikon mount, and it's basically only Nikon and Leica-R.

The mount is dumb. The literature says you can still change the iris setting inside the camera. I have no idea how that works. Perhaps the mount contains an iris blade?

Probably a left over from the HMQ10 that this is based on.

$18,000 is hard to ignore!

Thanks Gillvane, and VanVideo - lol good point :) The iris would work by turning the thumb screw on the mount - Nikon glass has a catch in the lens that can be manually moved which is why it's useable via a dumb mount on other systems. Not a big issue, but losing IS would be a pain.
