Just who is String Cheese Incident?

About a year ago, I bought a bunch of used DAT tapes for a decent price, not great but decent.

Well today, I actually went through them and found a bunch of live recordings (20 tapes of full, live sets) of them. They are decent quality. Apparently they aren't unknown, although they are to me, they got 888,000 hits on Google. These are from 1995 to 2001 and range from Mexico to BC and WA to CA

Just who are these guys? I would hate to erase these tapes, and then find out I was sitting on something valuable. But I need some 90-120min DAT tapes for this weekend and as you know DAT is getting hard to find.

Holy Cow, after inventorying and listening to these tapes, I also have 27 Phish concerts, all live stuff from around the US , 2 Neil Young concerts and a bunch little known stuff (at least to me).

These are High Quality recordings! 48K! According to the notes, he used some pretty nice mics/equipt. too.

I think my best bet is to contact these people or their people and let them know I have these. I am a bit concerned now.

I hate to out myself as a hippie, but I've been to a few String Cheese Incident and Phish shows. Both bands specialize in playing improvisational music, and no two concerts are alike. Both bands allow people to bring tape recorders and record their concerts. While fans are not allowed to profit from their recordings, both bands condone people trading various tapes of their concerts. If you're going to contact anyone, try to find to person who made the recordings. Maybe they feel off the back of a VW bus. The taper would probably be happy to get ahold of their recordings.

If you need to reuse the DAT tapes, then I suppose the karmically groovy thing to do would be to upload the shows to archive.org before erasing the tapes.

If you ever see one of these hula hoops on a road sign, that's a string cheese sticker:

Buy some blanks... or get that stuff onto a hard drive and then use 'em. I'd back it up anyway.

Definitely back it up. I know TONS of phish and string cheese fans from my hometown... and these aren't your typical "band fans". These people are hardcore. Lots of Grateful Dead fans migrated towards Phish (were called "deadheads", now called "phishheads"), and String Cheese have their own die hard followers.

Well SCI got back to me and wanted dates and locations of the recordings and they will let me know if I can erase. Phish has not yet.

My mag is in a holding pattern.

The only thing I found were initials. No name, but this guy was an engineer and he knew his mikes and how to set them up. And he had to of travelled with the band.

I think I found the gem in the pile. A live recording of both Bob Marley and the Wailers and one of a Police concert. Both were recorded in Germany in the 80's. Wow!
