FS7: Just want to take a moment to appreciate the reliability of the FS7

Woah, i just had Convergent Design support reply that the Odyssey 7Q+ is useless for professional work with the Sony a series cameras.

Thank you for contacting Convergent Design Martin

And thanks for the video showing the image shift, that is a known issue that we have with HDMI to our recorders. We have not done an testing with the Lockport adapters, they look rather interesting and in theory appear that they should provide better connections to the DSLR cameras. However you have proof that this is not the case.

The only recommendation I would have it to try a different HDMI cable, in my daily testing I frequently have to switch between multiple cables to find the one that is going to work today, while tomorrow a different cable works better. There does not seem to be any rhyme nor reason for their operation, and nothing that is constant with the cables..

If this is true, the units are sold on false advertising and i demand my money back for my less than a month old unit.

And i need to shoot 4K with a gimbal mounted DSLR next week.

Perhaps you should be having that conversation in private with them then.

I'll just add that HDMI is a horrific interface and wherever possible should be avoided. There is no system in existence that uses HDMI and offers flawless user experience, except a home tv setup.

Don't stress it Martin, the OD7+ is brilliant. You'll soon find you can't live without it. Mine has been working flawlessly with the FS7 since the January FW upgrade.

Agree with Ben though, HDMI is the devil's connection.

Yeah i know the Odyssey is/was great, had it for 1,5 years with the FS700. Selling it together with FS700 was a mistake since it felt empty without -it- as a monitor.

But the HDMI and the selling point of the O7Q+ is a different topic. Especially if its the devils connection. I just returned the Sony a7S II because of the price and the fact that i already could record with the Sony a7S I and O7Q+ instead. Even the reviews state that you should record externally with the a7S II because of overheating. In retrospect, that was a huge mistake. I got fooled by the advertising.

Im stressing because i already have one ruined 10 minute long docu shot and i got more shots next week that will not be possible to recreate without heavy costs for my company. So i need this to work at least 99% on location.

Its my first time using HDMI, and i really thought it would be better seeing how many is actually using this setup (a7S + recorder) in professional settings.

But i guess this is also why i ponied up for the FS7 in the first place.

Even if it has found its way onto a lot of more expensive gear, don't forget that it is a consumer interface that people are shoehorning into a professional environment. Not to say it can't do a job, but I have never heard of someone using HDMI exclusively and never once having a problem with it.

So if i upgrade the firmware, i will no longer have destroyed HD recordings in the future?

If thats true, how can you as a company let such a firmware through quality control anyway?
Please do not put words in my mouth.

I said that this may help with your issue. We always try to make improvements with each firmware release. Everything gets better over time (or at least they should).

We do extensive QC testing on our firmware. Sometimes things get through. In fact we release a list of Known Issues with every firmware update. Many other companies do this as well.

Have you never had a computer that froze on you?

The Odyssey works. It is the cables and the HDMI connections - often the HDMI connection on the other device -- that can cause issues.

This is like condemning a car because you got some bad gasoline pumped into it.

I am sorry that we cannot 100% warranty that everything will function perfectly all the time. You are connecting our equipment to other equipment and using cables to do so. We cannot control those cables and that other equipment, so we cannot warranty that they will always absolutely perform perfectly.

That said, issues are a rare occurrence and we strive to make them rarer still.

Controls are stupid. Lack of saving presets is stupid. Lack of batch controls is stupid. Grading tools look awful compared to Resolve or even Lumetri. Applying a change to every clip universally is stupid.

I miss the simplicity and elegance of Content Browser. I just need to check footage, make backups, and organize clips. Everything else just gets in the way.

I hear you Doug. Windows doesnt display the XAVC files and VLC does not play them smoothly so it takes forever to ingest footage using my old method. Havent taken my time to figure a new and better way yet.

As for the issue, all files before and after the recording in question is fine, so after hearing how Jim at Convergent Design tests cables, i guess thats how i will do it. Take a couple of minutes to stare into the Odyssey and look for artifacts before each shoot. Its better than having to haul the Ronin, Steadycam vest, and FS7 around in the mountains by foot power.
