"Just Visiting" - Sci-Fi short

Hey Everyone,

I just finished a short film using the DVX100a.

It’s a short Sci-Fi story about a girl and a strange visitor. On the surface it’s just a fun little spacey movie. If you read between the lines a little, the deeper message is that kids always see things differently than adults…

Thanks for checking it out! Feedback welcome.

I was just wondering where you got your alien from?

Also, that little girl looked a lot like Drew Barrymore from E.T. Sweet.

Hey Gnome,
Thanks for watching.

The alien was actually a Halloween prop from years past. I actually pulled it out of the basement when I was looking for something else and the story was born out of that…you could probably find something similar at one of the Halloween stores that pop up around at that time of the season.

Funny about the E.T. comment because there is definitely some E.T. influence going on in there!

I liked it alot. What did you use to create the music I liked it very much as well. How did you get the alien to blink his eyes.

Hi Triplej,

Thanks for the compliments!!

I wrote the music using an Alesis qs88 keyboard and Cubase. I record the parts as midi with Cubase so I can easily edit. Then I record each track individually to wav files and mix it in Vegas with a video track. So, most of the musical sounds are from the keyboard itself. The sound effects for the meteor crashing down was a mix of some sounds from the keyboard and actually a sound from my electric guitar reversed with some reverb added.

Okay, with the alien I first did all my editing and color correction so that I was sure everything was final. Then I exported a sequence of stills out of after effects that was at the time that I wanted the blink. I thought that half a second would work, so I output 15 still frames of the alien from the final (I shot at 30p, so obviously 15 frames being half of 30 per second). Then I brought the 15 frames into Photoshop and made a single photoshop file with a layer for each of the still frames. Then I used the clone/stamp tool along with copying, pasting and scaling some of the eyelid area to create the individual blink frames. But once I did 7 frames I was able to reverse the order for the blink back up, if that makes sense…also, for the slo-mo section I did end up using a lot more frames to make the blink look like it fit with the speed of the scene. Yes, it was a little painstaking, but hey, I just put on some good music and rocked away while I worked…

Thanks again for the compliments! Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks for the reply the alien blink workflow sounds tedious and fun! I loved the music I need to get me an Alesis qs88 keyboard and cubase.

Yeah, it was fun despite the tedious nature of it. Thanks for the compliment on the music. That keyboard does have some nice sounds...
