Just talked to Heliopan about the variable ND filters - good news.

You guys use this with a polarizer? If so...any adverse effects? Also would a circular or linear polarizer be better?

Using an variable ND together with a polarizer will give you a filter for changing color temperature.

okidokes...so scratch polarizer. So that means to get polorizing i'd have to use normal ND's with a polarizer. So what kinda filter you u use on top of this then...i mean to utilize the front threads...like a grad filter or something.

I have a foldable rubber sunshade in the front treads, so I just can grab it and dial my ND in.
In front of the whole shebang sit´s a mattebox. Mostly use Grad-ND to darken the sky there.

kool. thinking of getting a mattebox eventually but for more shading the lens from light washing out the image. i'd still want the variable ND as i think it will make me be able to dial in the exact exposure i want better than 4x4's

Good news and bad news. Filter arrived from Fotomayr, but unfortunately somehow a "slim" filter without a front thread ended up in what should have been a front threaded filter box. Fotomayr will replace with correct filter if I ship it back to them. Not a cheap exercise when you're based in South Africa. Nonetheless, received excellent service from Sally. Good news is that the quality is superb on a telephoto lens. Used it at 400mm on my 100-400mm Canon L series and image remained absolutely crisp, unlike other variable ND's I have tried previously.

Has anyone got a work around to cope with using the slim filter inside a hood, else I'll have to ship mine back to get the front threaded version.

oh forgot to post...got my mine and been using it for some days now. loving it so far. Sharp images BUT there is def a slight colour shift to my eyes... nothing objectionable but def not neutral to me. The lightcraft fader and this aren't even in the same stratosphere...but so is the price :). Thanks again Frank.

Am I the only one getting nasty green-like reflections on the filter? It happens much more indoors but also outdoors.

So I received my 77mm heliopan. So far, no problems with lines or shattered pieces... the ring is a bit looser than I'd wish so it rattles ever so slightly, but it's not a huge deal as long as it doesn't spontaneously shift when one merely moves the camera. One interesting and somewhat surprising thing is that when using the filter, I get a slightly warmer light, like an ever so slight yellow/golden overlay, especially noticeable in skin tones. I was doing a photo shoot of an Asian guy and I definitely saw that. I need to do more tests, but that's how it appears to me. I was kinda hoping for more neutral, "just ND" effect, but I guess nothing is perfect. Anyone else seeing this?

Hello Frank,

Thanks for the directions. The only thing I am confused about is step 6. Which postal service do I choose for shipment to the USA?

Since I got some questions about the order process, here is how it goes:

Done!

You than receive a mail with the Paypal account.
This may take a while, since they do it by hand, not automatic. So be patient.

Hope that helps, Frank

best, Frank

I've used the 77mm version a few times now, and have definitely noticed
1) lots of green reflections (dealt with by covering up light sources facing the camera lens.. i.e. windows, etc.)
2) slight colour tint depending on the angular position of the filter

Are others also seeing this? I was under the impression that the Heliopan is priced the way it is because it does NOT have any colour tint. Green ghost reflections... well, considering they ruin the shot, not exactly ideal either.

@ Oldcorpse and KMarandi...I also get a slight colour tint and was a bit disappointed because of it. Its better than my regular tiffen screw ins re:tint (when i stack 2), but i too was under the impression that it was totally neutral. Sharpness-wise though i love it.

Just in case people wanted to see the colour shift difference in the Heliopan and Tiffen ND filters. I however forgot to get a clip with no filter for reference.
Hey jambredz,

Were these the regular Tiffen ND series? I just wonder how those compare to the Indie series.
