Just talked to Heliopan about the variable ND filters - good news.

Funny, I was just looking at Fotomayr today. Good prices.

One thing though, I definitely have the need for a polarizing filter combined with a variable ND.
I know Singh Ray makes one, but I don't find them as neutral or sharp as with Heliopans.

I don't like stacking either, but with the Helio's at least you have half a chance.

Sure wish they had a combined product...
Any other suggestions are welcome !

I don´t know about other countries, but here in Germany they are available since quite a while

Thanks Frank, that's a much better price. Most resellers outside of Germany are still flogging the old filter without threads. The only way to tell the difference is the product code
: 16071 for the old 77mm and
FI6940-77 for the new one. Damn my parents for not teaching me Deutsch!

Foto Mayer sales worldwide and you can pay by Paypal.

If anyone needs help, drop me a line

Frank

P.S. if anyone wants my spare 72mm Heliopan without the front treads (almost new in original case), I sale it for $170 + shipping (new at B&H $383.99)

Hey Frank have you compared a 4x4 True-Pol to a Kaesemann? The Kaesemann appears to be more contrasty. I don't know if the True-Pol was deliberately made to be lower contrast for film work or if the Kaesemann is just better.

Since I got some questions about the order process, here is how it goes:

1. Go to the website http://www.fotomayr.de/webkat98/homepage.php?/html/006620.HTM and choose your ND size, than click on the little shopping chart

2. Click "bestellen" to order

3. Click "Kundendaten" to checkout

4. Type in your name, address and all, than click on "Kundendaten absenden" to go to the next page.

5. Click "Versand und Zahlungswunsch" to go to the next page

6. Choose your carrier, check Paypal and click "Daten absenden" to go to the next page

7. Click "Bestellung abschliessen" to finalize your order

Done!

You than receive a mail with the Paypal account.
This may take a while, since they do it by hand, not automatic. So be patient.

Hope that helps, Frank

best, Frank

Hi all,

Thank you Frank for the heads up and those instructions.

I noticed there's an 82mm version as well. I assume everyone typically buys the largest size and then uses step up rings after that.

Is the 82mm just overkill? i.e. no typical lens will require it?

Just wondering it it's smartest to get the 77 still.

Thanks,
Kian

Thanks for all the website guidance Frank, it looks like a great shop. Is there any way to tell from the shopping cart if the items are in stock or do assume because they are listed they are in stock? There are some symbols that are next to some of the filters, but not others, a green "24" circle next to some, but not, for example the 77mm, which I was considering.

Thanks again.

frank-

with shipping to new york city/usa is there a guess as to the total price?

i have on order with able cine/nyc a 77mm vario but would MUCH prefer the option of threads.

thanks for all of yhe effort.

be well

Excuse me if I misunderstand, but are you saying you want to stack a polarizer on top of a Vari-ND?

I'm not a huge fan of Vari-NDs because they consist of two polarizers, & I can't imagine the benefit of adding yet another.

I have no idea, after you choose destination and carrier it probably pops up somewhere.
But since it is not a Piano, I guess it´s not that much.

@kmoreau893 The green 24 circle means it ships within 24 hours, everything else is within a few days.

I don't know if the heliopan consists of two polarizers or not. But I know they are just amazing. If you haven't used one, don't make the mistake of judging them because of what other Vari-NDs have done. They are in a whole nother class in my opinion.

That is exactly what I am saying and the benefit is obvious.
Independent darkening of the sky, elimination of reflections plus an addtional 5 stops of control.

Actually Singh Ray already sells one like this, but there is color distortion. The Heliopans are sharper and completely neutral, so much more feasible.
Also bloody expensive.

Just ordered the 82mm thinking biggest is best (then you just use step-up rings).

While looking for rings, I'm noticing that going up to 82 involves additional intermediary step-up rings.

Should I have gotten the 77mm ND filter instead?

The group's feedback would be greatly appreciated, as I'm just getting into the world of lenses...

Is stacking step-up rings not advisable?
